Job Description

Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) is seeking dedicated Stevedores to join our critical operations team in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. As a Stevedore, you will be an essential part of the engine that drives the South African economy, ensuring the efficient and safe loading and unloading of various cargo types from vessels at the Durban Port. This role is far more than just manual labour; it requires precision, exceptional teamwork, strict adherence to safety protocols, and a keen eye for detail in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. You will be working within a dynamic port setting, often exposed to various weather conditions and operating near heavy machinery, contributing directly to the movement of goods that connect South Africa to the world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Efficiently and safely load and unload cargo from vessels, including containers, break-bulk, and other commodities, using appropriate equipment and techniques.
  • Operate various port equipment and machinery (e.g., cranes, forklifts, reach stackers) as trained and certified, under strict supervision, to move and position cargo.
  • Secure and unsecure cargo on vessels and within the terminal area, ensuring stability and preventing damage during transit and storage.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, operational procedures, and company policies, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Participate actively in pre-shift briefings and safety talks, promptly reporting any hazards, unsafe conditions, or equipment malfunctions to supervisors.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a high-performing team, communicating effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and vessel crew to ensure smooth operations.
  • Inspect cargo for damage or discrepancies upon arrival and departure, accurately documenting and reporting any issues to supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe work area, contributing to overall terminal efficiency and hazard reduction.
  • Willingness and ability to work irregular hours, including shifts (day, night, rotating), weekends, and public holidays, as port operations run 24/7.

Required Skills

  • Proven physical fitness, stamina, and agility to perform demanding manual labour tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team-oriented, fast-paced industrial environment.
  • Strong understanding and unwavering commitment to workplace safety procedures and protocols.
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination, spatial awareness, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately and efficiently.
  • Reliable, punctual, and possess a strong, responsible work ethic.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills to understand instructions and complete basic documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a port, maritime, logistics, warehousing, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Knowledge of cargo handling procedures, terminology, and equipment.
  • A valid driver's license (Code B or higher).
  • Certification in operating specific port equipment (e.g., forklift, reach stacker, straddle carrier).
  • A National Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
