The Nongoma Local Municipality is seeking a dedicated and energetic Gardening Assistant to join our Public Parks team. As a Gardening Assistant, you will be involved in the day-to-day maintenance and enhancement of Nongoma’s cherished public gardens, playgrounds, and communal landscapes. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine landscaping and gardening tasks, including planting, weeding, pruning, watering, and mulching of flowerbeds, shrubs, and trees.
- Operate and maintain various gardening equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, blowers, and hand tools safely and efficiently.
- Assist in the preparation and maintenance of soil, ensuring proper nutrient levels and irrigation.
- Monitor plants for signs of disease or pest infestation and report findings to supervisors.
- Keep public parks, walkways, and recreational areas clean by removing litter, debris, and fallen leaves.
- Participate in seasonal planting and landscaping projects to enhance the aesthetic appeal of public spaces.
- Contribute to the upkeep of park infrastructure, including benches, signage, and fences, reporting any damage or repair needs.
- Adhere strictly to safety regulations and environmental guidelines while performing duties.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors to complete tasks efficiently and to a high standard.
- Engage with the public in a courteous and helpful manner when encountered in the parks.
Required Skills
- Basic knowledge of gardening techniques, plant care, and landscape maintenance
- Physical fitness and the ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in varying weather conditions
- Ability to operate basic gardening tools and equipment safely
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in landscaping, groundskeeping, or public park maintenance
- A valid South African Driver's License (Code B or higher)
- Knowledge of local plant species and environmental conditions in KwaZulu-Natal
- Certification in horticulture or a related field
- First Aid certification
