ROKANA Industries Nigeria Limited is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Welding Engineer to join our dynamic team in Enugu. The successful candidate will be instrumental in overseeing all welding activities, ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency across our manufacturing processes, particularly within our steel fabrication and heavy industrial components divisions. This role involves developing, implementing, and optimizing welding procedures, processes, and specifications for various projects. You will be responsible for material selection, qualification of welders and welding procedures, inspection, and troubleshooting welding-related issues. The Welding Engineer will also play a crucial role in enhancing productivity, reducing costs, and maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, qualify, and implement welding procedures (WPS) and procedure qualification records (PQR) in accordance with relevant international codes and standards (e.g., ASME, AWS, API).
- Conduct welder performance qualifications (WPQ) and manage welder certification records.
- Provide technical expertise and support to production, quality control, and design teams on all welding-related matters.
- Optimize welding processes and parameters to improve efficiency, quality, and reduce defects.
- Select appropriate welding consumables, equipment, and techniques for specific applications.
- Perform root cause analysis for welding defects and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Oversee non-destructive testing (NDT) and destructive testing of welded components to ensure compliance with specifications.
- Ensure all welding operations comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Train and mentor welding personnel, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and safety.
- Manage welding equipment maintenance and calibration schedules.
- Evaluate new welding technologies and materials for potential application and cost-effectiveness.
- Prepare detailed reports on welding performance, quality metrics, and project status.
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to integrate new designs and materials into manufacturing processes.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience as a Welding Engineer in a manufacturing or heavy industry setting.
- Strong understanding of various welding processes (e.g., SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW, SAW).
- Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols.
- Knowledge of metallurgical principles, material science, and their application to welding.
- Familiarity with national and international welding codes and standards (e.g., ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1).
- Experience with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and interpretation.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent certification (e.g., CSWIP).
- Master's degree in Welding Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks).
- Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
- Experience in heavy manufacturing, steel fabrication, or pressure vessel industries.
- Familiarity with quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001).
