WEMPCO Steel Mills, a leading name in the Nigerian steel industry, is actively seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Welder Assistant to join our vibrant fabrication team at our Ifo, Ogun facility. Your daily tasks will involve a variety of preparatory and supportive functions crucial to the welding process. This includes meticulously preparing materials such as steel sheets, pipes, and beams by cutting, grinding, and deburring them to precise specifications. You will also be responsible for assisting in the accurate setup and positioning of welding jigs, fixtures, and workpieces, ensuring optimal conditions for our welders. Maintaining a clean, organised, and hazard-free welding bay is a a critical aspect of your role, directly contributing to the overall safety and efficiency of our operations. We expect you to diligently transport materials and finished products using appropriate handling equipment, ensuring careful movement and storage. Beyond these core tasks, you will be expected to assist with basic grinding, sanding, and finishing touches on welded components, further honing your skills in metalwork.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist skilled welders in preparing materials for welding, including cutting, grinding, and deburring metal components.
  • Clean and organize welding areas, ensuring a safe and efficient workspace free from hazards.
  • Set up and position welding jigs, fixtures, and workpieces as directed by the welder.
  • Transport materials and finished products within the workshop using appropriate handling equipment.
  • Maintain and clean welding equipment, tools, and machinery, reporting any malfunctions or necessary repairs.
  • Perform basic grinding, sanding, and finishing tasks on welded components.
  • Handle and store welding electrodes, gases, and other consumables properly.
  • Strictly adhere to all safety protocols, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Monitor welding operations for quality assurance and report any deviations or concerns to the welder.
  • Provide general support to the fabrication team as needed to meet production targets.
  • Learn and apply fundamental welding techniques under supervision to contribute to simpler tasks.

Required Skills

  • Basic understanding of welding processes and metal fabrication principles.
  • Ability to read and follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and adherence to safety regulations.
  • Good physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform tasks requiring lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate basic hand tools and power tools safely (e.g., grinders, drills).
  • Team-oriented with excellent communication skills and a cooperative attitude.

  • Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (6-12 months) in a manufacturing, construction, or fabrication environment.

  • Experience operating forklifts or other material handling equipment (certification a plus).
  • Basic mathematical skills for measurements and calculations.
