Job Description

Are you passionate about making a tangible difference in community health and well-being through sustainable water solutions? NARWASCO is seeking a dedicated and skilled Water Technician to join our dynamic team, specifically focusing on our vital community projects within Narok County. In this critical role, you will be at the forefront of ensuring the functionality, efficiency, and safety of water supply systems that directly serve homes, schools, and health facilities in rural and peri-urban areas. Your work will involve hands-on technical tasks, ranging from the installation and maintenance of water infrastructure – including pipelines, pumps, and storage tanks – to conducting regular water quality tests and implementing minor repairs. Beyond the technical aspects, this position requires significant community engagement, working closely with local leaders and residents to understand their needs, provide technical guidance, and ensure the long-term sustainability of water projects. You will be instrumental in diagnosing and resolving system malfunctions, ensuring minimal disruption to water supply, and contributing to the overall improvement of public health standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair water distribution systems, including pipelines, pumps, meters, and storage tanks, particularly in community project sites.
  • Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on water infrastructure to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot faults in water supply systems, including identifying leaks, blockages, and pressure issues, and implementing timely solutions.
  • Perform regular water quality testing and collaborate with the public health team to ensure water supplied meets national and international standards.
  • Supervise the safe excavation and backfilling of trenches for pipe laying and repair works.
  • Engage with local communities, leaders, and project beneficiaries to provide technical advice, conduct user training, and gather feedback for project improvement.
  • Prepare detailed reports on work performed, materials used, system status, and any challenges encountered.
  • Adhere strictly to safety regulations and operational procedures to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and the community.
  • Assist in the planning and execution of new water infrastructure development projects within Narok County.

Required Skills

  • Proven technical proficiency in water systems installation, maintenance, and repair.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities for mechanical and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective community engagement.
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Proficiency in using standard tools and equipment for water utility work.
  • Valid Kenyan driving license (Class BCE or similar).
  • Basic computer literacy for reporting and data entry.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or Certificate in Water Engineering, Plumbing, Civil Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 2 years of practical experience as a Water Technician, preferably with exposure to community-based projects.
  • Knowledge of local water regulations and environmental standards in Kenya.
  • Experience working with diverse rural communities.
  • Certification in occupational health and safety.
