Job Description
Are you a skilled and dedicated technician passionate about ensuring access to safe water and improved sanitation for vulnerable communities? SNV Netherlands Development Organisation is seeking a proactive Water & Sanitation Technician to join our dynamic team in Byumba, Gicumbi District, Rwanda. In this vital role, you will be instrumental in the implementation, maintenance, and repair of various water supply and sanitation systems across our project sites. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and corrective repairs of various water points, boreholes, gravity flow schemes, piped water networks, and other water supply infrastructure.
- Install, troubleshoot, and maintain sanitation facilities, including household latrines, institutional latrines, handwashing stations, and basic waste management systems.
- Perform routine water quality testing at source and distribution points, ensuring adherence to national and international drinking water quality standards.
- Monitor water production and distribution systems, ensuring efficient, equitable, and sustainable supply to targeted communities.
- Prepare comprehensive and accurate technical reports, including daily activity logs, maintenance records, material usage reports, and incident reports.
- Collaborate effectively with community WASH committees, providing technical guidance, hands-on training, and ongoing support on the operation and basic maintenance of WASH facilities.
- Identify and recommend practical improvements, upgrades, or rehabilitation initiatives for existing WASH infrastructure to enhance performance and longevity.
- Support the procurement process of necessary spare parts, tools, and materials, while maintaining an organized inventory of essential equipment.
- Adhere strictly to all SNV and national safety protocols, environmental guidelines, and quality standards during all field operations.
- Actively participate in community mobilization and hygiene promotion activities, contributing to increased awareness and adoption of safe WASH practices.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (at least 3 years) in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water supply and sanitation systems.
- Strong practical knowledge of plumbing, pump mechanics, basic electrical systems, and civil works related to WASH infrastructure.
- Ability to conduct accurate water quality testing using field kits and interpret results effectively.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a demonstrated ability to diagnose and troubleshoot technical issues under pressure.
- Proficiency in Kinyarwanda and English (oral and written) for effective communication.
- Ability to work independently in remote and challenging field locations and manage time and resources effectively.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills for engaging constructively with diverse communities and local partners.
- Physical fitness and ability to perform demanding tasks in various environmental and weather conditions.
- Valid motorcycle driving license and proven experience in navigating rural terrains for field assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or Advanced Certificate in Water Engineering, Hydraulics, Civil Engineering, Public Health Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Previous experience working with an International Non-Governmental Organisation (INGO) or in community-based WASH projects in rural settings.
- In-depth knowledge of the local context, cultural nuances, and administrative structures within Gicumbi District.
- Familiarity with basic GIS tools or mobile data collection applications for mapping water points and infrastructure.
