Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to join our Public Works team. As a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, you will be instrumental in ensuring the efficient and compliant operation of the City of Welland’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. This vital role involves monitoring, operating, and maintaining complex equipment and processes to treat wastewater in accordance with all provincial and federal regulations, safeguarding public health and protecting our natural waterways. The successful candidate will possess a strong understanding of wastewater treatment principles, mechanical aptitude, and a commitment to environmental safety. You will perform routine inspections, conduct laboratory tests, troubleshoot operational issues, and contribute to the overall maintenance of the plant facilities. This position requires meticulous attention to detail, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and a readiness to respond to operational needs, which may include shift work and emergency call-outs. Key Responsibilities
- Operate and monitor all wastewater treatment plant equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, clarifiers, aeration basins, and disinfection systems.
- Conduct regular inspections, rounds, and preventative maintenance on plant equipment and facilities.
- Perform routine laboratory tests on wastewater samples (e.g., pH, DO, suspended solids, chlorine residual) and accurately record data.
- Adjust chemical dosages, flow rates, and operational parameters to optimize treatment processes and meet effluent quality standards.
- Troubleshoot operational issues, identify mechanical or process problems, and perform minor repairs or escalate complex issues to appropriate personnel.
- Maintain detailed operational logs, reports, and records of plant activities, readings, and incidents.
- Ensure strict compliance with all environmental regulations, health and safety protocols, and operational procedures.
- Participate in the calibration and maintenance of instrumentation and control systems.
- Respond to alarms, emergencies, and abnormal operating conditions, including participation in on-call rotations.
- Assist in the training of new operators and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills
- Valid Class 1 or 2 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification (Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks – MECP).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in the operation of a municipal wastewater treatment plant.
- Strong understanding of wastewater treatment processes, microbiology, and chemistry.
- Proficiency in performing standard laboratory tests and interpreting results.
- Mechanical aptitude and basic electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and process schematics.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for reporting and team collaboration.
- Proficient in using computer systems for data entry, monitoring, and reporting.
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid Class 3 or 4 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification (MECP).
- Post-secondary education in Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
- Experience with SCADA systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Familiarity with the Ontario Water Resources Act (OWRA) and Environmental Protection Act (EPA).
- Additional certifications in confined space entry, first aid, or CPR.
