Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians during comprehensive physical examinations, surgical procedures, dental operations, and other medical interventions, including preparing surgical sites and meticulously monitoring anesthesia.
- Perform a wide array of diagnostic tests such as blood work, urinalysis, fecal examinations, and radiographs, accurately recording and reporting all results in patient charts.
- Administer prescribed medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian, ensuring precise dosages, proper routes of administration, and adherence to all safety protocols.
- Provide compassionate and diligent nursing care to hospitalized patients, which includes feeding, walking, maintaining hygiene, monitoring vital signs, and ensuring their comfort and well-being.
- Educate pet owners comprehensively on animal care best practices, post-operative instructions, medication administration techniques, and essential preventative health measures.
- Maintain the highest standards of cleanliness and sterility in examination rooms, surgical suites, treatment areas, and for all medical equipment and instruments.
- Prepare, sterilize, and organize surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring readiness for all procedures.
- Accurately manage and update patient records, ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of all medical information.
- Assist with inventory management of medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, and laboratory reagents, ensuring adequate stock levels.
- Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely, demonstrating proficiency with various species and temperaments.
- Provide basic emergency care and first aid under direct veterinary supervision, responding calmly and effectively to critical situations.
Required Skills
- Diploma or Certificate in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Minimum of two (2) years of proven experience as a Veterinary Technician or in a similar animal care role, preferably with experience in both small and large animals.
- Proficiency in veterinary medical terminology, procedures, and pharmacology.
- Strong technical skills including venipuncture, catheter placement, radiography positioning and processing, and basic laboratory analysis.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively and empathetically with clients, colleagues, and animals.
- Demonstrated empathy, compassion, and a professional demeanor towards animals and their owners.
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced environment, handling emergency situations with composure and competence.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills for electronic record keeping and communication.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Sciences, or a related field.
- Experience with veterinary practice management software (e.g., Avimark, Cornerstone, or similar local systems).
- Fluency in both Kinyarwanda and English is highly advantageous.
- Prior experience working in a multi-species veterinary practice.
- Membership in a professional veterinary technician association or equivalent.
