Job Description

Are you passionate about animal care and looking to kickstart or advance your career in the veterinary field? Dennilton Animal Clinic is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Veterinary Assistant to join our growing team. This is a vital support role that contributes significantly to the smooth operation of our clinic and the high standard of care we provide. As a Veterinary Assistant, you will work closely with our veterinarians and veterinary nurses, assisting with everything from patient intake and preparing for examinations to maintaining a clean and sterile environment. You will be instrumental in ensuring a positive experience for both our animal patients and their owners, offering comfort, support, and professional assistance throughout their visit. This role requires a strong work ethic, a compassionate heart, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist veterinarians and veterinary nurses during examinations, treatments, surgical procedures, and dental cleanings.
  • Prepare examination rooms and surgical suites, ensuring they are meticulously cleaned, sterile, and fully stocked with necessary supplies.
  • Safely and humanely restrain animals of various sizes and temperaments for examinations, procedures, and vaccinations.
  • Administer prescribed medications, injections, and treatments under the direct supervision of a veterinarian or veterinary nurse.
  • Monitor and provide comprehensive care for hospitalized animals, including feeding, walking, exercising, and observing for any changes in their condition.
  • Perform basic laboratory tasks such as collecting samples (blood, urine, faeces) and preparing them for analysis.
  • Maintain exceptional cleanliness and sanitation throughout the entire clinic premises, including kennels, cages, treatment areas, and common spaces.
  • Sterilize surgical instruments and equipment using appropriate techniques and protocols.
  • Assist with client communication, including answering phones, scheduling appointments, greeting clients, and providing basic information on pet care.
  • Process client payments, manage invoices, and maintain accurate, up-to-date patient records and files.
  • Provide empathetic emotional support and comfort to pet owners during difficult or stressful times.
  • Assist with inventory management, stocking supplies, and ensuring all necessary equipment is available and in working order.

Required Skills

  • Proven passion for animal welfare and a genuine love for animals.
  • Excellent communication and strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients and team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle and restrain animals safely, calmly, and compassionately.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail in all tasks.
  • Ability to work effectively and maintain composure in a fast-paced, demanding, and sometimes emotionally challenging environment.
  • Basic computer proficiency for record-keeping, scheduling, and basic administrative tasks.
  • Reliable, punctual, and possessing a strong work ethic.
  • Physical stamina to lift and move animals (up to 25kg independently, more with assistance), stand for long periods, and perform various physical tasks associated with animal care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working in a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, pet grooming, or similar animal care setting.
  • Veterinary Assistant certification or completion of relevant animal care coursework.
  • Foundational knowledge of basic animal anatomy, physiology, and common animal diseases.
  • Experience handling a variety of animal species, including both small animals (dogs, cats) and potentially livestock.
  • First aid and CPR certification for animals.
