As a long-distance truck driver, you will be the backbone of our clients’ operations, transporting various types of cargo over extended distances. Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate heavy-duty trucks (e.g., articulated trucks, rigid trucks) over long distances, adhering to all road safety regulations and company policies.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of vehicles and equipment, reporting any defects or issues promptly.
- Load and unload cargo, ensuring proper securing and weight distribution in compliance with safety standards.
- Plan and execute efficient delivery routes, considering road conditions, traffic, and delivery schedules.
- Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, delivery manifests, and electronic logbook data.
- Communicate effectively with dispatch, clients, and team members regarding delivery status, delays, or emergencies.
- Adhere to all legal driving hours regulations and rest periods to ensure personal and public safety.
- Perform minor roadside repairs and maintenance tasks as needed.
- Represent the company professionally at all times when interacting with clients and the public.
- Ensure timely and secure delivery of goods to designated locations.
Required Skills
- Valid Code 14 (EC) driver's license with PrDP (Professional Driving Permit) for heavy goods vehicles.
- Minimum of 3 years of verifiable long-distance truck driving experience.
- Excellent knowledge of South African road network and traffic laws.
- Strong understanding of vehicle maintenance and safety procedures.
- Ability to operate electronic logging devices (ELDs) and GPS systems.
- Proven track record of safe driving and adherence to deadlines.
- Physical fitness and stamina to handle long hours of driving and occasional manual labor.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Additional training or certifications in defensive driving or hazardous materials transport (HazMat).
- Experience with various types of cargo, including temperature-controlled goods.
- Familiarity with cross-border logistics and customs procedures.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for minor truck repairs.
