Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Tree Nursery Manager to lead our state-of-the-art tree nursery operations in Lothair, Mpumalanga. This pivotal role involves overseeing the entire lifecycle of our tree seedling production, from seed procurement and germination to nurturing healthy saplings ready for planting in our extensive plantations. As a Tree Nursery Manager, you will be instrumental in ensuring the consistent supply of high-quality seedlings, which are the foundation of Sappi’s sustainable forestry initiatives and commercial success. You will be responsible for implementing best practices in nursery management, optimizing growth conditions, and leading a team of dedicated nursery staff. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to environmental stewardship, reforestation efforts, and the economic prosperity of the region. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in horticulture or forestry, exceptional leadership skills, and a passion for sustainable agriculture. Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of tree seedling production, including seed handling, propagation, germination, transplanting, and hardening-off processes.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive nursery operational plans, budgets, and schedules to meet production targets.
  • Lead, train, and supervise a team of nursery technicians and general workers, fostering a safe and productive work environment.
  • Ensure strict adherence to quality control standards for seedling health, vigor, and uniformity.
  • Implement effective pest, disease, and weed management strategies using integrated approaches.
  • Oversee irrigation, fertilization, and environmental control systems within the nursery.
  • Maintain accurate records of all nursery activities, inventory levels, and production metrics.
  • Manage the procurement, storage, and maintenance of nursery equipment and supplies.
  • Conduct regular inspections and assessments of seedling performance and growing conditions.
  • Liaise with forestry operations and research departments to align nursery output with planting schedules and genetic improvement programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, environmental, and forestry regulations.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for process improvement and efficiency gains within the nursery.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 4 years of proven experience in nursery management, preferably large-scale tree nurseries.
  • Strong knowledge of silviculture, horticulture, plant physiology, and soil science.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management capabilities.
  • Proficiency in budget management and operational planning.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
  • Experience with inventory management systems and basic computer applications (MS Office).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Valid South African driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or National Diploma in Forestry, Horticulture, Agriculture, or a related field.
  • Experience with specific tree species cultivated in Mpumalanga (e.g., Eucalyptus, Pinus).
  • Knowledge of relevant South African forestry standards and regulations.
  • Certification in pesticide application or similar relevant certifications.
  • Fluency in local indigenous languages (e.g., isiZulu, SiSwati).
