Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Translator/Interpreter to join our dynamic team in Maputo, Mozambique. This critical role ensures seamless and accurate communication between our Portuguese-speaking staff, local Mozambican employees, community stakeholders, and government officials who primarily communicate in local Mozambican languages. As a Translator/Interpreter, you will be instrumental in bridging linguistic and cultural gaps, enabling effective collaboration, understanding, and operational efficiency across various departments, including technical operations, community relations, human resources, and legal affairs. Your work will directly impact our ability to engage authentically with local communities, manage our projects successfully, and ensure compliance with local regulations. This position demands not only exceptional linguistic abilities but also a keen understanding of cultural nuances, sensitivity to context, and the ability to handle confidential information with the utmost discretion. You will be responsible for both written translations of diverse documents and real-time interpretation during meetings, workshops, and official engagements. Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate and culturally appropriate interpretation (simultaneous and consecutive) during meetings, presentations, workshops, training sessions, and community engagement activities involving Portuguese and various Mozambican local languages.
- Translate a wide range of documents including technical reports, legal documents, human resource policies, community development plans, official correspondence, and communication materials from Portuguese to local Mozambican languages and vice versa.
- Proofread and edit translated materials to ensure accuracy, consistency, and adherence to established terminology and company style guides.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and impartiality regarding all interpreted and translated content.
- Develop and maintain glossaries and terminology databases specific to Sasol’s operations in the energy and chemicals sector to ensure consistency.
- Act as a cultural liaison, providing insights into local customs and practices to foster better understanding and relationships between internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist in developing communication strategies that are linguistically and culturally appropriate for target audiences.
- Travel occasionally to project sites or community locations within Mozambique as required for interpretation duties.
Required Skills
- Exceptional fluency in both spoken and written Portuguese and at least two prominent Mozambican local languages (e.g., Changana, Sena, Makhuwa, Ronga, Ndau).
- Proven experience in both translation and interpretation, with a strong understanding of different interpretation modes (simultaneous, consecutive).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and accurately.
- Strong cultural awareness and sensitivity to local Mozambican contexts.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and familiarity with translation memory (TM) tools or CAT tools.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Linguistics, Translation, Modern Languages, or a related field.
- Certification from a recognized translation or interpretation body.
- Prior experience working in the energy, mining, or extractive industries, or with international NGOs in Mozambique.
- Familiarity with technical terminology related to engineering, environmental science, and community development.
- Proficiency in English is an added advantage.
