Job Description

As a Tour Guide specializing in Wine & Farm experiences at Boschendal Estate, you will be the charismatic face of our rich heritage and vibrant present. You will lead engaging and informative tours through our historic farm, covering our award-winning vineyards, state-of-the-art cellar facilities, and diverse agricultural landscapes. Your role will involve sharing captivating stories about Boschendal’s 300-year history, our pioneering commitment to regenerative farming practices, and the intricate process of winemaking from grape to glass. You will expertly conduct guided wine tasting sessions, explaining varietals, pairing suggestions, and the nuanced characteristics of our acclaimed wines.

Beyond wine, you will showcase our ethical farming methods, introducing guests to our sustainable orchards, bountiful gardens, and animal husbandry, emphasizing our authentic farm-to-table philosophy. This position requires a passionate storyteller with a deep appreciation for culture, agriculture, and hospitality. You will be responsible for creating an unforgettable, immersive, and educational journey for both local and international visitors, ensuring they leave with a profound connection to Boschendal and the Western Cape’s natural beauty and gastronomic excellence. You will interpret complex historical and agricultural information in an accessible and entertaining manner, adapting to diverse audience needs and maintaining the highest standards of guest satisfaction and safety. This hybrid role allows for on-site immersion in our stunning estate while offering flexibility for administrative or planning tasks that can be managed remotely or with a flexible schedule, ensuring a dynamic work-life balance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct engaging and informative guided tours of Boschendal Estate's vineyards, cellar, gardens, and farm operations.
  • Lead structured wine tasting sessions, educating guests on varietals, terroir, and the winemaking process.
  • Share Boschendal's history, heritage, and sustainable farming practices with enthusiasm and accuracy.
  • Answer guest questions comprehensively and professionally, providing exceptional customer service.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of all tour participants, adhering to all estate guidelines.
  • Manage tour schedules, group logistics, and timing efficiently.
  • Assist with tour bookings, inquiries, and relevant administrative tasks as needed.
  • Continuously update knowledge on Boschendal's products, history, and agricultural initiatives through ongoing training.
  • Collaborate effectively with other estate departments, including retail, culinary, and events, to enhance the overall visitor experience.
  • Provide constructive feedback on guest experiences and tour content to improve future offerings and delivery.

Required Skills

  • Excellent verbal communication and captivating storytelling skills in English.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of viticulture, winemaking processes, and wine tasting principles.
  • Genuine passion for agriculture, sustainability, and local history and culture.
  • Ability to engage, manage, and lead diverse groups of people with varying interests.
  • Exceptional customer service orientation and a friendly, approachable demeanor.
  • Punctual, reliable, and highly organized with strong time management skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, public holidays, and occasional evenings.
  • Valid South African driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fluency in an additional language (e.g., Afrikaans, German, French, Mandarin) is highly advantageous.
  • Previous experience (1-2 years) as a tour guide, sommelier, or in a similar hospitality/tourism role.
  • Formal qualification or certification in tourism, hospitality management, agriculture, or wine studies.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Knowledge of local fauna and flora.
