Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Tobacco Farm Manager to oversee all aspects of our tobacco farming operations. This critical role involves the comprehensive management of a large-scale tobacco farm, ensuring optimal yield, quality, and sustainable practices from land preparation to post-harvest curing. The successful candidate will be responsible for the entire cultivation cycle of tobacco, including planting, irrigation, pest and disease control, harvesting, and curing, all while adhering to strict quality standards and environmental regulations. You will lead a dedicated team, manage resources effectively, and implement modern agricultural techniques to maximize productivity and profitability. This position requires a strong blend of technical expertise in tobacco agronomy, exceptional leadership skills, and a commitment to achieving excellence. The role is primarily based on-site at our farm located in a key tobacco-growing region near Harare, requiring active, hands-on involvement in daily farm activities. Key Responsibilities
- Manage and supervise all day-to-day tobacco farming operations, including land preparation, planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest and disease control.
- Oversee the harvesting and curing processes, ensuring optimal leaf quality and adherence to specified standards.
- Develop and implement detailed crop management plans, schedules, and budgets.
- Lead, train, and manage a team of farm workers, fostering a productive and safe working environment.
- Monitor crop health, identify issues, and implement timely and effective interventions.
- Manage farm machinery, equipment, and infrastructure, ensuring proper maintenance and utilization.
- Maintain accurate records of farm activities, inputs, outputs, and financial transactions.
- Ensure compliance with all agricultural, environmental, and labor regulations.
- Implement sustainable farming practices and promote soil health and biodiversity.
- Prepare regular reports on farm performance, challenges, and progress to senior management.
- Collaborate with agronomists and external experts to adopt new technologies and improve farming methods.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 5 years of practical experience in large-scale commercial tobacco farming.
- Proven experience in managing farm operations and a diverse team of workers.
- In-depth knowledge of tobacco agronomy, including cultivation, harvesting, and curing techniques.
- Strong understanding of pest and disease management in tobacco.
- Proficiency in agricultural machinery operation and maintenance.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and make informed decisions under pressure.
- Sound financial management and budgeting abilities.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Agriculture, Agronomy, or a related field.
- Experience with specific tobacco varieties cultivated in Zimbabwe.
- Knowledge of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and sustainable farming certifications.
- Familiarity with modern irrigation systems and precision agriculture technologies.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
