Job Description

As a Timber Mill Worker at York Timbers, you will be an integral part of our dynamic production team, playing a crucial role in the efficient processing of timber from raw logs into high-quality finished products. This physically demanding yet rewarding position requires individuals who are reliable, possess a strong work ethic, and are committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality. Your daily responsibilities will involve operating and monitoring a variety of specialized machinery and equipment within our state-of-the-art timber mill. You will be responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of materials through various processing stages, conducting quality checks, and strictly adhering to all company safety protocols to ensure a secure working environment for yourself and your colleagues. Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor various timber processing machinery, including saws, planers, chippers, and grading equipment, ensuring efficient and safe operation.
  • Load, unload, sort, and stack timber products manually or using mechanical aids, adhering to proper handling procedures and minimizing waste.
  • Perform routine quality checks on timber at various stages of processing, identifying defects and ensuring all products meet required specifications and company standards.
  • Conduct basic routine maintenance and troubleshooting of mill equipment, reporting any malfunctions, breakdowns, or safety concerns promptly to supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area throughout the shift, ensuring compliance with all housekeeping and safety standards to prevent accidents.
  • Assist with inventory management tasks, including accurate counting, labeling, and storage of raw timber and finished products.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including the consistent and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors to achieve daily production targets and contribute to overall mill efficiency.
  • Participate actively in all required training programs to enhance skills, knowledge, and understanding of timber processing techniques and equipment.

Required Skills

  • Physical fitness and ability to lift heavy objects (up to 25kg) and stand for extended periods.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow verbal and written instructions accurately.
  • Basic understanding of machinery operation and mechanical aptitude.
  • Unwavering commitment to workplace safety and strict adherence to safety protocols.
  • Reliable, punctual, and possessing a strong, proactive work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • Basic communication skills (reading, writing, and speaking English for safety and instruction comprehension).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience (at least 1 year) in a timber mill, manufacturing plant, or similar heavy industrial environment.
  • Familiarity with various timber species and basic wood grading standards.
  • Valid forklift operator certification or demonstrated experience operating heavy lifting equipment.
  • First Aid certification or willingness to undergo training.
  • Relevant NQF Level 1 or 2 qualification in Wood Processing, Plant Operations, or a related technical field.
