Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and experienced Timber Grader to join our dynamic team at our Dalton operations in KwaZulu-Natal. As a Timber Grader, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality and classification of our timber products, directly impacting the efficiency of our sawmill and the satisfaction of our customers. This position demands a keen eye for detail, a solid understanding of timber characteristics, and the ability to work effectively within a fast-paced production environment. You will be responsible for meticulously inspecting raw and processed timber, identifying defects, and accurately grading materials according to specified industry standards and customer requirements. Your expertise will be vital in optimising timber utilisation, minimising waste, and maintaining the high-quality reputation that Mondi is known for. The role involves physical work in a mill setting, often outdoors, and requires adherence to strict safety protocols. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough visual inspections of timber products (logs, lumber, planks) for defects such as knots, splits, decay, insect damage, and warpage.
- Accurately grade timber according to relevant national and international grading standards (e.g., SANS, NHLA) and specific customer specifications.
- Operate and monitor grading machinery and equipment, ensuring optimal performance and accurate sorting.
- Measure and record dimensions (length, width, thickness) of timber pieces with precision.
- Mark and stamp graded timber clearly for subsequent processing, stacking, or dispatch.
- Maintain detailed records of timber grades, volumes, and defects detected.
- Identify and segregate non-conforming timber, reporting significant quality issues to supervisors.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, procedures, and company policies, ensuring a safe working environment for yourself and colleagues.
- Perform routine quality checks on grading equipment and assist with minor maintenance as required.
- Collaborate with production and quality control teams to continuously improve grading processes and timber quality.
Required Skills
- Minimum 2-3 years of proven experience as a Timber Grader or in a similar quality control role within a sawmill or timber processing plant.
- Comprehensive knowledge of various timber species common in South Africa and their characteristic defects.
- Strong understanding of timber grading rules and standards.
- Excellent visual acuity and attention to detail.
- Ability to perform accurate measurements and basic mathematical calculations.
- Physical fitness and stamina to stand, walk, and lift timber in varying environmental conditions.
- Strong commitment to workplace safety.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and record-keeping.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal certification in Timber Grading (e.g., from relevant industry bodies).
- Experience with electronic grading systems.
- Forklift operator's license.
- Knowledge of sawmill operations and timber manufacturing processes.
