Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Specialist Biomedical Scientist (BMS) to join our Haematology and Blood Transfusion department. This is a crucial role within our cutting-edge diagnostic laboratories, pivotal in providing accurate and timely results that directly impact patient diagnosis and treatment. As a Specialist BMS, you will be integral to the day-to-day operation of our state-of-the-art facilities, performing complex analytical procedures across a broad spectrum of haematological and blood transfusion investigations. Your expertise will support clinicians in managing a diverse patient population, from routine screenings to critical cases requiring urgent intervention.

Working within a dynamic team, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining advanced laboratory equipment, interpreting results, and troubleshooting technical issues. A strong commitment to quality assurance and continuous improvement is essential, as you will contribute to maintaining our UKAS accreditation standards and participate in audit processes. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a wide range of complex haematological and blood transfusion investigations, including morphology, coagulation, and blood grouping, ensuring accuracy and precision.
  • Operate, maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot highly sophisticated laboratory equipment.
  • Interpret and validate laboratory results, escalating critical findings to senior staff and clinicians promptly.
  • Participate in the department's quality management system, including internal and external quality control programs, audit, and accreditation processes (e.g., UKAS).
  • Contribute to the training and supervision of junior Biomedical Scientists and support staff.
  • Adhere strictly to all departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), health and safety regulations, and professional codes of conduct.
  • Participate in the continuous review and development of laboratory services and scientific methods.
  • Engage in continuing professional development (CPD) activities to maintain and enhance specialist knowledge and skills.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure data integrity within laboratory information systems.

Required Skills

  • HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist (BMS)
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology with Blood Transfusion or equivalent demonstrable specialist experience
  • Extensive post-registration experience working in an NHS Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining a range of automated laboratory analysers
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work accurately under pressure
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in the use of laboratory information management systems (LIMS)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of participation in audit and service improvement projects
  • Experience in training and mentoring junior staff
  • Familiarity with UKAS accreditation standards (ISO 15189)
  • Experience with specialist tests such as flow cytometry or molecular diagnostics
