Are you a passionate and dedicated Special Education Teacher ready to make a profound impact on the lives of students with diverse learning needs? The St. Landry Parish School Board is seeking an exceptional Special Education Teacher to join our committed team in Opelousas, Louisiana. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Provide direct specialized instruction to students in various settings (e.g., resource rooms, co-taught classrooms, pull-out programs) using differentiated teaching methods and adaptive materials.
  • Assess student learning and progress regularly, analyzing data to inform instructional decisions and modify IEPs as needed.
  • Collaborate effectively with general education teachers, parents, administrators, and related service providers (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists) to support student success.
  • Manage student behavior effectively, implementing positive behavior interventions and supports to create a conducive learning environment.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, providing expertise and advocacy for students' educational needs.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records, including progress reports, attendance, and IEP documentation.
  • Stay current with best practices, research, and legal mandates in special education through continuous professional development.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful classroom environment where all students feel safe, valued, and encouraged to learn.
  • Communicate regularly and transparently with parents/guardians regarding student progress, challenges, and goals.

Required Skills

  • Valid Louisiana teaching certification in Special Education (Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe Disabilities, or equivalent)
  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field
  • Proficiency in developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
  • Strong knowledge of various disabilities and evidence-based instructional strategies for diverse learners
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to differentiate instruction and adapt curriculum to meet individual student needs
  • Effective classroom management techniques and experience with positive behavior interventions
  • Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and using data to drive instruction

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Special Education or a related field
  • Experience working with students across different grade levels (elementary, middle, high school)
  • Experience with specific assistive technologies or specialized instructional programs
  • Fluency in Spanish or other languages common in the community
  • Experience in a co-teaching model or inclusion classroom setting
