Job Description
REREC is seeking a dedicated and skilled Solar Panel Technician to join our dynamic team in Wajir, Kenya. This is an exceptional opportunity to play a pivotal role in the installation, maintenance, and repair of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems across various projects in Wajir County. As a Solar Panel Technician, you will be instrumental in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of our solar installations, contributing directly to our mission of expanding energy access in rural areas. Key Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair solar PV systems, including panels, inverters, batteries, charge controllers, and monitoring equipment.
- Conduct thorough site assessments to determine optimal solar panel placement, system design requirements, and structural integrity.
- Perform electrical wiring and connection of solar components in strict compliance with safety standards, national electrical codes, and REREC guidelines.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose system malfunctions, performing necessary repairs, component replacements, and system upgrades.
- Conduct routine preventative maintenance to ensure optimal system performance, efficiency, and longevity.
- Adhere strictly to all REREC safety protocols, industry best practices, and environmental regulations during all phases of installation and maintenance.
- Prepare detailed reports on work performed, materials used, system performance metrics, and any encountered issues.
- Educate clients and end-users on system operation, basic maintenance procedures, and critical safety precautions.
- Work collaboratively with project managers, engineers, and other technical staff to ensure project completion within established deadlines and budgets.
- Assist in the accurate inventory management of solar components, tools, and equipment at project sites.
- Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment safely and effectively.
Required Skills
- Diploma or Certificate in Electrical Engineering, Solar Technology, Renewable Energy, or a closely related technical field.
- Proven experience (at least 2 years) in solar PV system installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Strong understanding of electrical circuits, wiring, grounding, and safety standards (e.g., Kenya Power & Lighting Company standards).
- Proficiency in using a wide range of hand and power tools common in electrical, construction, and solar installation work.
- Ability to read and accurately interpret technical diagrams, blueprints, single-line diagrams, and electrical schematics.
- Excellent problem-solving, diagnostic, and analytical skills for identifying and resolving system issues.
- Physical fitness and ability to work at heights, lift heavy equipment, and perform tasks in various weather conditions and remote environments.
- Valid driver's license (Class BCE or similar) with a clean driving record.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to safety practices and procedures.
- Good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience working on solar projects in rural or remote areas of Kenya, particularly in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).
- Certification in solar PV installation or maintenance from a recognized institution (e.g., Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) licensed technician).
- Knowledge of different inverter technologies (grid-tied, off-grid, hybrid) and their respective applications.
- Familiarity with various battery storage systems and their integration into solar PV installations.
- Ability to speak local languages relevant to Wajir County (e.g., Somali, Borana) will be an added advantage.
- Basic computer literacy for report generation and system monitoring software.
