Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Plumber to join our dynamic team, operating within a hybrid work model that combines essential field work with administrative and planning tasks at our local municipal depot in Cofimvaba. As a Plumber for the Chris Hani District Municipality, you will be instrumental in maintaining, repairing, and installing critical water and sanitation infrastructure across the district. This vital role involves a blend of independent site visits to address immediate plumbing needs, troubleshoot complex issues, and conduct preventative maintenance, alongside structured time at our facility for team briefings, inventory management, reporting, and strategic planning. You will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and safe operation of municipal plumbing systems, responding to emergency call-outs, and implementing sustainable solutions that serve our communities effectively. Key Responsibilities
- Perform skilled plumbing tasks including installation, maintenance, and repair of water supply systems, drainage systems, and sewage networks across municipal properties and public infrastructure.
- Diagnose and resolve plumbing issues, including leaks, blockages, pipe bursts, and fixture malfunctions, effectively and efficiently.
- Conduct preventative maintenance on plumbing infrastructure to extend its lifespan and minimise service disruptions.
- Respond promptly to emergency plumbing call-outs during and outside regular working hours, ensuring swift resolution of critical issues.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams to accurately plan and execute plumbing projects.
- Ensure all work complies with relevant municipal codes, health and safety regulations, and industry standards.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent on each task, submitting reports to supervisors.
- Manage and maintain plumbing tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition and used safely.
- Collaborate with other municipal departments and external contractors as required to complete projects.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior staff or apprentices when necessary.
- Participate in regular team meetings and training sessions at the municipal depot to enhance skills and discuss operational strategies.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a qualified Plumber with a strong understanding of plumbing systems.
- Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills for identifying and rectifying plumbing faults.
- Proficiency in various plumbing techniques including pipe fitting, soldering, welding, and drainage system installation.
- Knowledge of local plumbing codes, regulations, and health and safety standards.
- Ability to work independently on-site and collaboratively within a team setting at the depot.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and community members.
- Valid South African driver's license (Code B or higher) with a clean driving record.
- Physical fitness and stamina to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- NQF Level 3 or 4 qualification in Plumbing or a related field.
- Red Seal certification as a Plumber.
- Experience working within a municipal or public works environment.
- Basic computer literacy for data entry and report generation.
- First Aid certification.
