Job Description

Christiana Engineering Works is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Boiler Maker to join our dynamic team in Christiana, North West. This full-time, on-site position offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to play a crucial role in the fabrication, assembly, maintenance, and repair of boilers, pressure vessels, tanks, and other heavy steel structures. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of engineering principles, an unwavering commitment to safety, and a proven ability to work with precision on complex projects. You will be responsible for interpreting intricate engineering drawings, performing meticulous layout work, precise cutting, shaping, and joining of metal plates and pipes, and ensuring all work meets stringent quality and regulatory standards. Key Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to accurately determine job requirements and project scope.
  • Lay out, mark, and meticulously prepare metal plates, sections, and pipes for cutting, shaping, and fitting operations.
  • Operate various sophisticated machinery and tools, including plate rolling machines, presses, shears, grinders, and drilling machines with expert precision.
  • Perform precise cutting, shaping, and forming of metal components using advanced oxy-acetylene cutting, plasma cutting, and other relevant techniques.
  • Assemble and fit boiler components, pressure vessels, tanks, and other heavy structures accurately according to detailed specifications and industry standards.
  • Execute various welding processes (e.g., MMA, TIG, MIG) on different material types, ensuring high-quality, defect-free welds that meet all required certifications.
  • Conduct thorough inspections and rigorous tests on completed work to ensure strict compliance with quality standards, safety regulations, and client specifications.
  • Perform essential maintenance, repair, and modification of existing boiler and pressure vessel systems, identifying and resolving issues efficiently.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols, industry best practices, and environmental regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate effectively and communicate clearly with engineers, welders, and other tradespeople to ensure seamless project completion on schedule and within budget.
  • Maintain a consistently clean, organized, and efficient work environment, promoting productivity and safety.

Required Skills

  • Valid Boiler Maker Trade Test Certificate (Red Seal or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 3 years of proven experience in fabricating, assembling, and repairing boilers, pressure vessels, and heavy steel structures.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings, blueprints, and complex welding symbols.
  • Expertise in various welding processes (e.g., SMAW/MMA, GTAW/TIG, GMAW/MIG) across different material types and thicknesses.
  • Strong knowledge of metal properties, advanced fabrication techniques, and stringent quality control procedures.
  • Excellent understanding and unwavering adherence to safety regulations and best practices in a heavy industrial environment.
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and other relevant material handling equipment (valid certification is highly advantageous).
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and strong teamwork abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Matric Certificate or NQF Level 4 equivalent.
  • Additional certifications in specialized welding techniques (e.g., high-pressure welding) or advanced safety protocols.
  • Experience with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods (e.g., visual inspection, dye penetrant testing) is a significant advantage.
  • Previous experience working in a busy fabrication workshop or a heavy industrial/mining environment.
