Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and passionate Artisan/Craftsperson to join our creative team in Maputo. This role is an incredible opportunity for an individual with exceptional manual dexterity, artistic vision, and a deep respect for Mozambican cultural traditions. As an Artisan/Craftsperson at Kulungwana, you will be instrumental in creating, restoring, and showcasing authentic Mozambican crafts, contributing directly to our mission of cultural preservation and promotion. You will work with a diverse range of materials, including but not limited to wood, clay, textiles, metals, and natural fibers, to produce high-quality, culturally significant pieces. This position requires not only technical proficiency but also an innovative spirit to adapt traditional methods while maintaining authenticity. You will collaborate with other artists, participate in workshops, and potentially guide community projects, sharing your expertise and passion. Key Responsibilities

  • Design, create, and finish high-quality artisanal products using various traditional and contemporary techniques.
  • Work with diverse materials such as wood, clay, textiles, beads, metals, and natural fibers to produce unique crafts.
  • Ensure the authenticity, cultural relevance, and high aesthetic standards of all produced items.
  • Collaborate with other artists and cultural experts on special projects, exhibitions, and educational initiatives.
  • Source, prepare, and manage raw materials, ensuring sustainable and ethical practices.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment.
  • Participate in community workshops and mentorship programs, sharing skills and knowledge with aspiring artisans.
  • Assist in the repair and restoration of existing craft pieces when required.
  • Document processes, designs, and material usage for cultural preservation and inventory purposes.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in at least two distinct craft forms (e.g., pottery, wood carving, textile weaving, jewelry making).
  • Exceptional manual dexterity, precision, and attention to detail.
  • Strong understanding of traditional Mozambican art forms, patterns, and cultural significance.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Creativity and innovation in adapting traditional techniques to new designs.
  • Proficiency in basic tools and equipment relevant to your craft.
  • Knowledge of material properties and sourcing.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training or apprenticeship in a specific craft discipline.
  • Experience in teaching or mentoring others in craft techniques.
  • Proficiency in Portuguese; knowledge of local Mozambican languages (e.g., Changana, Sena) is a plus.
  • A portfolio showcasing a diverse range of completed craft projects.
  • Experience with sustainable and eco-friendly craft practices.
