Job Description
Boesmansrug Boerdery is seeking a dedicated and experienced Shepherd to join our team in Van Wyksdorp, Western Cape. This is a unique opportunity for an individual deeply connected to the land and livestock, who possesses a profound understanding of sheep behaviour and their welfare. As a Shepherd, you will be the primary caregiver for our Merino flock, playing a crucial role in their health, safety, and productivity. Your days will be a blend of traditional shepherding duties on the open veld and engaging with modern farm management practices, contributing to a truly hybrid work model.
While the core of this role involves hands-on animal care and being present with the flock on our sprawling pastures, we recognize the evolving needs of modern farming. You will be responsible for meticulous record-keeping, documenting flock movements, health observations, and lambing data. This administrative aspect, along with planning grazing rotations, researching best practices, and participating in virtual farm management meetings, can be performed remotely or from a dedicated farm office, offering a degree of flexibility. This blend ensures you are deeply embedded in the daily life of the farm while also contributing to strategic oversight and data-driven decisions.
The ideal candidate will thrive in the rugged beauty of the Klein Karoo, demonstrating exceptional observational skills, resilience, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. You will be instrumental during critical periods such as lambing and shearing, ensuring the well-being of our animals through all seasons. This position requires someone who not only loves animals but also understands the intricacies of sustainable land use and has a strong sense of responsibility. You will be a vital link between the flock and the farm management, reporting regularly and providing insights that inform critical decisions. Come and be the guardian of our flock, contributing to the legacy of Boesmansrug Boerdery in a role that harmonizes ancient traditions with contemporary agricultural demands.
