Job Description
Are you a visionary artist with a passion for bringing creative concepts to life on stage and in unique performance spaces? Roundhouse, Camden’s iconic hub for music, arts, and youth creativity, is seeking an experienced and innovative Set Designer to join our dynamic production team. This is an unparalleled opportunity to contribute to a diverse range of groundbreaking performances, events, and educational projects within one of London’s most historic and revered venues. As a Set Designer at Roundhouse, you will be instrumental in transforming artistic visions into tangible, immersive environments that captivate audiences and support the artistic integrity of each production. You will work closely with directors, lighting designers, costume designers, and technical teams from concept to realization, ensuring that every element of the set contributes to a cohesive and impactful experience. This role requires not only exceptional artistic talent and a keen eye for detail but also strong practical knowledge of materials, construction techniques, safety standards, and budget management. You will be expected to produce detailed drawings, models, and visualisations, adapting designs to suit the unique architectural challenges and opportunities presented by the Roundhouse space and various off-site locations. Roundhouse is more than just a venue; it’s a creative engine, fostering new talent and presenting a year-round programme of world-class music, theatre, circus, and digital art. Our Set Designer plays a pivotal role in shaping the immersive experiences that define our productions, from large-scale concerts to intimate theatrical performances and experimental youth projects. You will be at the forefront of translating abstract ideas into physical realities, crafting environments that not only look spectacular but also function seamlessly for performers and crew. This involves a deep understanding of stagecraft, an ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, and a commitment to delivering high-quality designs within specified timelines and financial parameters. We value innovation and a willingness to explore new materials and technologies, always with an eye towards enhancing the audience experience and supporting the artistic director’s vision. Beyond the design phase, you will oversee the construction, installation, and dismantling of sets, working closely with our in-house technical teams and external fabricators. This is a highly collaborative role, requiring excellent communication skills to articulate your designs, negotiate creative solutions, and integrate effectively with all departments involved in a production. If you are passionate about the performing arts and possess the expertise to craft unforgettable visual narratives, we encourage you to apply and help us continue to push the boundaries of artistic expression.
