Job Description
Bela-Bela Primary School is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and dedicated School Counselor to join our esteemed team. This pivotal full-time role involves supporting the emotional, social, and academic development of our primary school learners. The successful candidate will be instrumental in creating a positive and inclusive school climate, where students feel safe, understood, and empowered to navigate their challenges and achieve their full potential. You will work directly with students, individually and in groups, to address a wide range of developmental and situational needs. This includes providing guidance on academic planning, social skills development, personal growth, and conflict resolution.
A significant aspect of this role involves collaborating closely with teachers, parents, and school administration to develop and implement comprehensive guidance programs aligned with the school’s educational philosophy. You will also be a key resource for identifying and supporting students facing personal difficulties, family issues, or academic hurdles, offering timely interventions and referrals to external support services when necessary. Key Responsibilities
- Provide individual and group counseling to students facing academic, social, or emotional challenges.
- Develop and implement comprehensive school guidance programs focusing on character development, peer relations, and life skills.
- Conduct classroom guidance lessons on topics such as conflict resolution, anti-bullying, and healthy coping mechanisms.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and administrators to support student success and address behavioral or academic concerns.
- Act as a liaison between the school and external community resources, facilitating referrals for specialized services when appropriate.
- Respond to crisis situations within the school, providing immediate support and intervention.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of student interactions and progress.
- Assist in the identification of students with special needs and participate in intervention planning.
- Organize and facilitate workshops for parents on relevant topics like parenting strategies and child development.
- Participate in school-wide initiatives and professional development activities.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- SACE (South African Council for Educators) registration.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a School Counselor, educational psychologist, or similar role, preferably in a primary school setting.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong crisis intervention and problem-solving abilities.
- Proficiency in maintaining confidentiality and ethical counseling practices.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, parents, and external stakeholders.
- Fluency in English and at least one other official South African language (e.g., Afrikaans, Sepedi) is highly advantageous.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Educational Psychology, or related field.
- Experience with restorative justice practices or positive behavior support systems.
- Familiarity with local community resources and referral networks.
- Proficiency in conducting basic psychological assessments and interpreting results.
