Job Description
Pasadena Unified School District is seeking dedicated, safety-conscious, and compassionate individuals to join our team as School Bus Drivers. This critical role ensures the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school, field trips, and other school-related activities. As a School Bus Driver, you are often the first and last PUSD representative students interact with daily, making your role vital in setting a positive tone for their educational journey.
You will be responsible for operating various types of school buses in accordance with state laws, district policies, and traffic regulations, ensuring the utmost safety and well-being of all passengers. This includes conducting thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of your vehicle, maintaining cleanliness, and accurately documenting mileage, time, and student ridership. A key aspect of this position involves supervising students while they are on the bus, managing behavior effectively, and ensuring a respectful and orderly environment. Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate a school bus on assigned routes and schedules, ensuring timely arrival and departure.
- Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle, reporting any mechanical defects or maintenance needs promptly.
- Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, student counts, and trip sheets.
- Supervise and manage student behavior on the bus, enforcing safety rules and district policies.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and the transportation department.
- Ensure the cleanliness and proper maintenance of the school bus interior.
- Adhere to all traffic laws, safety regulations, and district procedures.
- Administer basic first aid or emergency care as needed, following established guidelines.
- Participate in mandatory safety meetings and ongoing training programs.
- Assist students with special needs, including proper use of adaptive equipment, as required.
Required Skills
- Valid California Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
- Current California School Bus Driver Certificate.
- Excellent driving record with no major violations.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test, and participate in ongoing random testing.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.
- Knowledge of traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and safety procedures.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, reliability, and a strong sense of responsibility.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of one year of experience as a commercial driver, preferably in a school transportation setting.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a plus.
- Knowledge of Pasadena, Altadena, and Sierra Madre geographical areas and road networks.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Experience working with children of varying ages and backgrounds, including those with special needs.
