Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Safety Officer to join our dynamic team in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina. As a Safety Officer specializing in Construction/Industrial settings, you will be instrumental in ensuring a safe working environment across our various project sites. This critical role involves developing, implementing, and monitoring health and safety programs and policies to comply with national regulations and company standards. Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive health and safety programs and policies in accordance with national laws and company guidelines.
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits to identify potential hazards, unsafe conditions, and non-compliance issues.
- Perform detailed risk assessments for all construction and industrial activities and recommend appropriate control measures.
- Investigate all accidents, incidents, and near-misses, preparing detailed reports and recommending corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Provide regular safety training and toolbox talks to all employees, subcontractors, and visitors on safety procedures, equipment operation, and emergency response.
- Ensure the proper use, inspection, and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) across all sites.
- Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, training sessions, incident reports, and corrective actions.
- Coordinate with project managers and site supervisors to integrate safety measures into project planning and execution.
- Oversee the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Lead emergency response efforts and ensure that emergency procedures are regularly practiced and understood by all personnel.
- Stay updated on new legislation and best practices in occupational health and safety relevant to the construction and industrial sectors.
Required Skills
- Proven experience as a Safety Officer in a construction or industrial environment.
- In-depth knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and standards (e.g., Factories Act, OSHA).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and train others.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify risks and develop solutions.
- Proficiency in conducting risk assessments and incident investigations.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Computer literacy, especially with MS Office Suite.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or HND in Environmental Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
- Professional certification in Occupational Health & Safety (e.g., NEBOSH IGC, OSHA 30-hour).
- Experience with ISO 45001 implementation.
- Knowledge of local language (Hausa) for effective communication with local workforce.
- Valid driver's license.
