Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-conscious Rock Drill Operator to join our dynamic underground mining team at the Cullinan Diamond Mine in Cullinan, Gauteng. This critical role involves the precise and efficient operation of various rock drilling equipment to prepare rock faces for blasting, ensuring the safe and continuous extraction of ore. The successful candidate will be instrumental in the primary mining process, working within a structured and disciplined environment that prioritizes safety above all else. You will be responsible for setting up, operating, and performing routine maintenance checks on rock drilling machinery, adhering strictly to operational procedures and safety protocols. This includes the identification of potential hazards, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and reporting any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns immediately. A deep understanding of geology, blast patterns, and underground mining conditions is essential for optimal performance. Key Responsibilities
- Operate various types of rock drilling machinery (e.g., face drills, long-hole drills) safely and efficiently.
- Perform pre-shift inspections and routine maintenance checks on drilling equipment.
- Accurately position and drill blast holes according to specified patterns and depths.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, procedures, and relevant mining regulations.
- Monitor equipment performance, identify potential issues, and report malfunctions promptly.
- Collaborate with shift supervisors, blasters, and other team members to ensure operational efficiency.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring compliance with housekeeping standards.
- Interpret geological maps and blast designs to optimize drilling operations.
- Assist with the charging of blast holes when required, under strict supervision.
- Participate in safety meetings and contribute to a proactive safety culture.
Required Skills
- Valid Rock Drill Operator Certificate/License.
- Minimum of 3 years of proven experience as a Rock Drill Operator in an underground mining environment.
- Thorough knowledge of rock drilling techniques and equipment.
- Strong understanding of mining safety regulations and procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret blast plans and geological information.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Physical fitness and ability to work in confined spaces and demanding conditions.
- Proficiency in basic equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Commitment to maintaining a high standard of safety and productivity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Valid Blasting Ticket/Certificate (competency certificate).
- First Aid Certificate.
