Job Description

Are you a highly motivated and technically proficient individual with a passion for renewable energy? Scatec is seeking a dedicated Renewable Energy Specialist to join our dynamic team in Cape Town, South Africa. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in the technical assessment, development, and optimization of our solar, wind, and storage projects across various stages, from initial feasibility to operational support. You will apply your expertise to analyze complex data, contribute to due diligence processes, and ensure the technical integrity and performance of our assets. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful projects that accelerate South Africa’s energy transition, working alongside a diverse group of engineers, project managers, and environmental specialists. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive technical due diligence for new renewable energy projects, evaluating site conditions, resource assessments (solar irradiation, wind data), and technology suitability.
  • Perform detailed energy yield assessments using industry-standard software (e.g., PVsyst, Windographer, WASP) and methodologies.
  • Support the engineering and design teams in optimizing plant layouts, equipment selection, and system configurations to maximize energy production and economic returns.
  • Monitor the performance of operational assets, identify deviations, troubleshoot technical issues, and propose corrective actions or optimization strategies.
  • Prepare technical specifications, scope of work documents, and assist in the evaluation of proposals from EPC contractors and equipment suppliers.
  • Stay abreast of emerging renewable energy technologies, industry best practices, and regulatory changes relevant to the South African market.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project development, finance, legal, and operations, to ensure seamless project execution and delivery.
  • Develop and maintain technical models and tools for project analysis and performance forecasting.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal stakeholders and external partners.
  • Support the preparation of environmental and social impact assessments by providing technical input related to project design and operation.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 4 years of proven experience in the renewable energy sector, specifically with solar PV, wind, or battery storage projects.
  • Strong proficiency in energy yield assessment software (e.g., PVsyst, Windographer, Homer Pro).
  • Solid understanding of power plant design principles, grid integration, and electrical balance of plant (BOP).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret complex technical drawings, specifications, and data sheets.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel for data analysis and modeling.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal, in English.
  • Valid South African driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering or renewable energy field.
  • Professional registration with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa).
  • Experience with project management methodologies or certification (e.g., PMP).
  • Familiarity with South African energy policies, regulations, and grid codes (e.g., NRS 097).
  • Experience with SCADA systems and plant monitoring platforms.
  • Knowledge of energy storage technologies and hybrid power solutions.
