Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Remote Viticulturist to join our dedicated team. This unique role is designed for a forward-thinking professional who can leverage cutting-edge technology and data analytics to optimize vineyard health and productivity from a remote setting. While your primary workstation will be remote, you will be an integral part of our viticultural strategy, contributing to the quality and consistency of our premium grapes. Your responsibilities will span across data collection interpretation, strategic planning, and virtual oversight of vineyard operations, ensuring that our viticultural practices are aligned with our sustainability goals and quality standards. This position offers an exciting opportunity to blend deep viticultural expertise with the flexibility and efficiency of remote work, utilizing advanced remote sensing technologies, GIS mapping, and vineyard management software to inform decisions. The ideal candidate will be adept at virtual collaboration, possess strong analytical capabilities, and be passionate about applying innovative solutions to traditional viticulture. You will provide critical insights to our on-site vineyard teams, guiding their efforts in canopy management, irrigation, pest and disease control, and harvest timing, all while contributing to our broader commitment to environmental stewardship and wine excellence. Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze vineyard data, including soil moisture, weather patterns, vine vigour, and yield projections, using remote sensing and GIS tools.
  • Develop and implement remote vineyard health monitoring protocols and early warning systems for pests and diseases.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations and strategic guidance to on-site vineyard managers and teams.
  • Conduct virtual consultations and training sessions for vineyard staff on best practices and new technologies.
  • Contribute to long-term vineyard development plans, including varietal selection, clonal choices, and block replanting strategies.
  • Stay abreast of global viticultural research, technological advancements, and sustainable farming trends.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports on vineyard performance, presenting findings and recommendations to management.
  • Collaborate with the winemaking team to ensure grape quality meets specific winemaking objectives.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Viticulturist in a commercial wine grape production environment (minimum 5 years).
  • Strong proficiency in vineyard management software, GIS, and remote sensing technologies.
  • Excellent data analysis and interpretation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote setting.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for virtual collaboration.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of sustainable viticultural practices and environmental stewardship.
  • Valid driver's license (for potential, though infrequent, site visits if required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Viticulture, Oenology, Agricultural Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with advanced precision viticulture techniques and artificial intelligence applications.
  • Certifications in sustainable viticulture or organic farming.
  • Fluency in Afrikaans would be an advantage.
