Job Description
Are you deeply passionate about astronomy and possess an exceptional ability to captivate audiences with the marvels of the night sky? Sterland Stargazing & Accommodation is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Remote Stargazing Tour Guide to join our team. While our primary physical tours are conducted under the magnificent dark skies of Sutherland, this unique role is structured to be primarily remote, leveraging your expertise to engage and educate a wider audience through virtual platforms, content creation, and pre/post-tour remote support. You will be instrumental in developing and delivering engaging astronomical content, both live virtual sessions and pre-recorded materials, to enhance our guests’ overall experience and to reach those unable to visit us in person. This role requires a blend of excellent communication skills, profound astronomical knowledge, and a strong aptitude for virtual presentation. You will guide participants through constellations, planets, galaxies, and nebulae, explaining complex scientific concepts in an accessible and fascinating manner, all from a remote base. Although the core of this role is remote, occasional travel to Sutherland for specific events, on-site content capture, or to lead specialized in-person tours may be required, allowing you to connect directly with the stars you so passionately describe. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who thrives on sharing knowledge, enjoys creative content development, and is comfortable using technology to bring the universe closer to people, no matter where they are.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver compelling remote stargazing presentations and virtual tours using digital platforms.
- Create engaging educational content (videos, articles, guides, social media posts) about astronomy, constellations, and celestial phenomena for online distribution.
- Provide pre-tour briefings and answer guest questions remotely to enhance their potential or planned on-site experience.
- Offer post-tour follow-ups and further educational resources to guests.
- Identify and articulate key celestial objects, constellations, and astronomical events visible from the Southern Hemisphere.
- Explain basic and advanced astronomical concepts in an easy-to-understand and engaging manner for diverse audiences.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current astronomical discoveries, events, and technologies.
- Assist with the promotion of Sterland's stargazing experiences through social media and other digital channels.
- Collaborate with the on-site team to ensure a cohesive and high-quality guest experience, integrating remote content with physical tours.
Required Skills
- Proven knowledge and deep passion for astronomy and celestial observation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Proficiency in using virtual meeting platforms (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet, Teams) for interactive presentations.
- Strong ability to create engaging digital content (e.g., PowerPoint, basic video editing, graphic design tools).
- Exceptional storytelling and virtual public speaking abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote setting.
- Customer service orientation with a friendly, patient, and inspiring demeanor.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree or advanced courses in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, Education, or related fields.
- Previous experience as a tour guide, educator, content creator, or presenter, especially in a virtual environment.
- Familiarity with stargazing software and equipment (e.g., Stellarium, planetarium software, basic telescope operation).
- Proficiency in additional South African languages (e.g., Afrikaans, Xhosa).
- Experience in advanced video production or graphic design for educational content.
Perks & Benefits
- Competitive salary with opportunities for professional development and growth.
- Flexible remote work environment that supports work-life balance.
- Opportunity to share your profound passion for astronomy with a global audience.
- Access to a vast array of astronomical resources and continued learning opportunities.
