We’re seeking a highly motivated and experienced Remote Metallurgist to join our dynamic team, based out of Boksburg, Gauteng, but operating entirely remotely. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to critical projects from anywhere within South Africa, leveraging your expertise to optimize mineral processing operations and material performance for our diverse client base.
As a Remote Metallurgist, you will play a crucial role in providing expert technical guidance and support, utilizing your deep understanding of metallurgical principles to solve complex challenges. Your responsibilities will span across various aspects, including conducting in-depth remote data analysis of operational processes, developing sophisticated metallurgical testing programs, and performing root cause analysis for equipment failures and performance bottlenecks. You will be instrumental in identifying opportunities for process improvement, material selection, and overall efficiency enhancement, often through virtual collaboration with on-site teams and clients. This role demands a proactive approach to problem-solving, a meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to translate complex technical information into actionable insights. You will contribute to the design and optimization of comminution, classification, and separation circuits, ensuring maximum recovery and efficiency. Furthermore, you will be expected to stay abreast of the latest advancements in metallurgical science and technology, continuously seeking innovative solutions that push the boundaries of current capabilities. Your reports and presentations will be key in communicating findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, driving informed decision-making across the organization and with our customers. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct remote metallurgical analyses and provide expert technical support to internal and external stakeholders.
- Optimize mineral processing circuits and material performance through data-driven insights and simulation.
- Develop, execute, and analyze metallurgical testing programs, reporting on findings and recommendations.
- Perform root cause analysis for equipment failures and operational inefficiencies, proposing effective solutions.
- Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and process documentation for various audiences.
- Collaborate virtually with cross-functional engineering, sales, and operations teams to achieve project goals.
- Provide guidance on material selection and wear mechanisms to improve product lifespan and performance.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in metallurgy and mineral processing.
- Participate in virtual client consultations, offering expert advice and problem-solving support.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or a related engineering field.
- Minimum of 4 years of progressive experience as a Metallurgist, preferably in mining or heavy industrial sectors.
- Strong understanding of mineral processing unit operations (e.g., comminution, flotation, hydrometallurgy).
- Proficiency in metallurgical software, data analysis tools, and statistical methods.
- Excellent technical report writing and presentation skills for diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a remote environment.
- Exceptional problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking abilities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for virtual collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Metallurgy or a closely related field.
- Professional registration with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) or equivalent.
- Experience with Weir Minerals equipment and technologies (e.g., Warman® pumps, Cavex® hydrocyclones).
- Demonstrated experience in a fully remote or hybrid working model.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing or Six Sigma principles.
