Job Description
We are seeking an exceptionally skilled and experienced Mechanical Artisan (Fitter) to join our innovative team in a unique, remote capacity as a Technical Support Specialist. While the traditional Fitter role is hands-on, this specialized position leverages your profound mechanical expertise and diagnostic acumen to provide critical remote technical guidance, troubleshooting, and maintenance planning support for our Sishen operations. This is not a hands-on ‘wrench-turning’ role, but rather a strategic position where your deep understanding of heavy mining equipment, hydraulics, pneumatics, and precision fitting allows you to remotely diagnose complex mechanical failures, interpret sensor data, develop preventative maintenance schedules, and virtually guide on-site technicians through intricate repair processes.
You will be instrumental in enhancing our operational uptime and efficiency through proactive analysis and rapid response to mechanical challenges. Utilizing cutting-edge remote diagnostic tools, virtual collaboration platforms, and detailed technical documentation, you will contribute significantly to our asset management strategies. Key Responsibilities
- Provide remote diagnostic support and troubleshooting for complex mechanical equipment failures across our mining operations.
- Analyze real-time equipment performance data, sensor readings, and historical maintenance records to identify potential issues and recommend preventive actions.
- Develop, review, and optimize preventative maintenance procedures and schedules based on equipment specifications and operational needs.
- Guide on-site technicians through intricate repair and maintenance tasks using virtual communication tools and detailed instructions.
- Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and operational teams to develop long-term asset management strategies and improve equipment reliability.
- Contribute to the creation and upkeep of technical documentation, maintenance manuals, and troubleshooting guides.
- Participate in virtual technical review meetings and provide expert insights on mechanical system performance and optimization.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and technological adoption to enhance remote maintenance capabilities.
- Provide remote training and mentorship to junior technicians on best practices for mechanical maintenance and diagnostics.
- Ensure adherence to all safety protocols and operational standards through remote monitoring and guidance.
Required Skills
- Trade Test Certificate as a Fitter (Red Seal or equivalent)
- Minimum 8 years of post-apprenticeship experience as a Mechanical Fitter, preferably in heavy industry or mining.
- Proven experience with remote diagnostic tools and software for mechanical systems.
- Strong understanding of hydraulic and pneumatic systems, conveyors, crushers, and earthmoving equipment.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to diagnose complex issues remotely.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills for virtual collaboration and technical documentation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) such as SAP PM.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote work environment.
- High level of computer literacy and comfort with virtual communication platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Zoom).
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant NQF Level 5 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
- Experience with IoT (Internet of Things) applications in maintenance and predictive analytics.
- Certifications in specific remote diagnostic technologies or data analysis platforms.
- Experience in a technical support, supervisory, or training role.
- Project management experience within a technical or maintenance environment.
