Job Description

Hessequa Municipality is seeking a dedicated and innovative ‘Remote Firefighter’ to join our Fire and Rescue Services team. This unique role is designed for a professional passionate about fire safety and prevention, capable of contributing significantly from a remote setting. While the title is ‘Firefighter,’ this specific position focuses heavily on the crucial aspects of fire prevention, public education, emergency preparedness planning, and administrative support, all conducted remotely using digital tools and communication channels. You will be instrumental in developing and implementing proactive strategies to mitigate fire risks across our communities, including Still Bay and surrounding areas, without needing to be on-site for active fire suppression.

Your work will involve leveraging technology to conduct virtual fire risk assessments, develop engaging online educational materials, and coordinate with on-site teams and community stakeholders to enhance overall fire resilience. This is an exceptional opportunity for an individual who understands the fundamental principles of firefighting and emergency management but wishes to apply their skills in a non-traditional, administrative, educational, and preventative capacity. The successful candidate will play a vital role in shaping our community’s understanding of fire safety, reducing incident rates, and supporting the operational efficiency of our physical fire response teams through diligent remote work. You will be expected to maintain a high level of professionalism, self-motivation, and effective communication while working independently and collaborating virtually.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, update, and deliver comprehensive remote fire safety education programs and public awareness campaigns via digital platforms.
  • Conduct virtual assessments and reviews of fire prevention plans and safety protocols for community buildings and public spaces.
  • Utilize data analytics to identify fire incident trends, high-risk areas, and propose targeted prevention strategies.
  • Assist in the remote development and revision of emergency preparedness and disaster management plans.
  • Maintain accurate digital records, compile reports, and manage databases related to fire prevention activities and public outreach.
  • Collaborate remotely with on-site firefighting teams, other municipal departments, and external stakeholders on fire safety initiatives.
  • Provide expert advice and respond to public inquiries regarding fire safety regulations, prevention, and emergency procedures through digital communication channels.
  • Research and stay updated on national and international fire safety standards, technologies, and best practices relevant to remote implementation.
  • Prepare educational content, presentations, and digital resources to promote a culture of fire safety within the Hessequa community.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience or strong understanding of fire safety principles and emergency management.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly.
  • High proficiency in digital tools and collaboration platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Google Workspace).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, especially in data interpretation and strategy development.
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, and capable of working independently in a remote environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop engaging educational content.
  • Familiarity with South African fire safety legislation and building codes.
  • Resilience and adaptability to evolving remote work requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A National Diploma or Degree in Fire Technology, Emergency Management, Public Safety, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in a remote work setting, particularly within public service or emergency services.
  • Certifications in Fire Safety Education, Fire Prevention Officer, or equivalent.
  • Experience with GIS software or other mapping tools for risk assessment.
  • Fluency in Afrikaans and Xhosa (in addition to English) is an advantage for community engagement.

Perks & Benefits

  • Competitive salary package with annual increments.
  • Comprehensive municipal benefits, including medical aid and pension fund contributions.
  • Flexible remote work environment.
  • Opportunities for continuous professional development and training.
  • Contribution to vital public safety services in a beautiful region.
  • Supportive and collaborative team culture.
