Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Remote Environmental Health Officer to join our dynamic team, based out of Giyani, Limpopo. This pivotal role involves ensuring the highest standards of environmental health are met across a diverse portfolio of projects primarily within the Limpopo province and potentially nationwide. As a Remote Environmental Health Officer, you will be instrumental in safeguarding public health and promoting environmental protection through diligent monitoring, assessment, and enforcement of environmental health regulations. You will collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, and local authorities, providing expert advice on environmental health matters related to our infrastructure development and consulting projects. This position requires a proactive individual capable of working independently, managing their schedule effectively, and maintaining strong communication channels with internal and external stakeholders. Your responsibilities will span from conducting remote audits and inspections, developing and implementing comprehensive environmental health management plans, to investigating public health concerns and ensuring robust compliance with national and local environmental health legislation. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct remote environmental health assessments, audits, and inspections of project sites and operations, ensuring compliance with regulations.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Environmental Health Management Plans (EHMPs) for various infrastructure and development projects.
- Ensure strict adherence to national, provincial, and local environmental health legislation and standards (e.g., National Health Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, NEMA).
- Investigate environmental health complaints and incidents remotely, recommending effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Provide expert advice and guidance on critical environmental health matters to project teams, clients, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Prepare comprehensive reports on environmental health performance, audit findings, and strategic recommendations.
- Liaise effectively with relevant governmental authorities (e.g., Department of Health, Department of Environmental Affairs) regarding permits, licenses, and compliance.
- Conduct risk assessments related to water quality, waste management, sanitation, food safety, and occupational hygiene protocols.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of environmental health policies, procedures, and internal training programs.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental health best practices, regulatory changes, and emerging issues within the sector.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a closely related scientific field.
- Minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience as an Environmental Health Officer or in a similar professional capacity.
- Current and valid registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Environmental Health Practitioner.
- Demonstrated thorough knowledge and understanding of South African environmental health legislation and regulations.
- Proven ability to conduct comprehensive environmental health assessments and develop effective mitigation strategies.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, suitable for diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with digital collaboration and project management tools.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, problem-solving, and decisive decision-making abilities.
- Highly self-motivated with excellent organizational, time management, and independent work skills essential for a remote role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Postgraduate qualification (Honours or Master's) in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a related discipline.
- Prior experience working within a consulting environment or on large-scale infrastructure development projects.
- Proficiency in additional official South African languages relevant to the Limpopo region.
- Valid South African driver's license and a willingness to travel for occasional, pre-arranged site visits when necessary.
- Familiarity with GIS software or environmental modelling tools for data analysis and reporting.
