Key Responsibilities

• Conceptualize, design, and implement engaging virtual environmental education programs and curricula for various target groups, including K-12 students, teachers, university groups, and the general public.
• Create high-quality, multimedia-rich digital educational resources, such as interactive presentations, educational videos, online learning modules, comprehensive lesson plans, and hands-on activity guides.
• Facilitate live online workshops, webinars, virtual field trips, and interactive Q&A sessions, ensuring an engaging and enriching learning experience for all participants.
• Utilize and master various digital tools and platforms (e.g., video conferencing software, learning management systems, educational apps, social media) to effectively disseminate educational content.
• Collaborate proactively with SANBI's research and conservation teams to integrate the latest scientific findings and critical conservation priorities into all educational materials.
• Routinely evaluate the effectiveness and impact of virtual programs, adapting content, delivery methods, and pedagogical approaches based on participant feedback and learning outcomes.
• Actively promote SANBI's educational initiatives through diverse online channels and engage meaningfully with virtual communities and stakeholders.
• Stay continuously updated on cutting-edge environmental education best practices, emerging digital learning trends, and pressing biodiversity conservation issues both locally and globally.
• Contribute to the drafting of grant proposals and prepare comprehensive reports related to educational projects, as required, securing funding for future initiatives.

Required Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Education, Conservation Biology, Education, or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 2-3 years of proven experience in environmental education, science communication, or a related educational role, with demonstrated expertise in remote content delivery.
• Strong track record in developing and delivering engaging educational content through digital platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Moodle, Adobe Connect).
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, with a distinct ability to simplify complex scientific information for diverse and non-specialist audiences.
• Proficiency in creating multimedia content (e.g., compelling presentations, basic video editing, graphic design for educational materials using tools like Canva or Adobe Spark).
• Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects independently and prioritize effectively in a remote setting.
• Highly self-motivated, adaptable, proactive, and capable of working effectively and collaboratively as part of a virtual team.
• Reliable high-speed internet connection and a conducive, professional home office environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Postgraduate qualification (Honours or Master’s) in a relevant environmental or educational field.
• Proficiency in an additional South African official language (e.g., Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu).
• Demonstrated experience with learning management systems (LMS) administration and advanced instructional design software.
• In-depth familiarity with South African biodiversity, ecological systems, and pressing conservation challenges.
• Prior experience working with a national botanical garden, nature reserve, or established conservation organization.
