Job Description

Are you an experienced and tech-savvy Librarian with a profound passion for digital information management and a keen eye for detail? Africa Media Online is seeking a highly motivated Remote Digital Librarian to join our growing team. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation and accessibility of invaluable African digital content from anywhere within South Africa. As a Remote Digital Librarian, you will play a pivotal role in organizing, cataloging, and managing our extensive digital archives and resources, ensuring their integrity, discoverability, and long-term preservation.

In this full-time remote position, you will be responsible for applying professional library and information science principles to a diverse range of digital assets, including images, videos, audio, and textual documents. Your primary focus will be on metadata creation, standardization, and quality control, enabling efficient search and retrieval for our diverse user base, which includes researchers, educators, content creators, and the general public. You will work independently, leveraging various digital asset management systems (DAMS) and content management systems (CMS), and collaborate virtually with team members across different departments and geographical locations. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on autonomous work, values innovation in digital librarianship, and is eager to make a tangible impact on cultural heritage.

This role requires a proactive individual who can adapt to evolving digital technologies and information management best practices. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain metadata standards and schemes (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, IPTC) for digital assets, ensuring consistency and accuracy across all collections.
  • Perform in-depth cataloging, indexing, and classification of digital images, video, audio, and text documents according to established guidelines.
  • Manage and administer Digital Asset Management Systems (DAMS) and Content Management Systems (CMS), including uploading, organizing, and tagging content.
  • Conduct thorough quality control checks on metadata and digital files to ensure adherence to established guidelines and digital preservation best practices.
  • Provide virtual research support and information retrieval assistance to internal teams and external users seeking specific content.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of digital preservation strategies to ensure the long-term accessibility and integrity of digital resources.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of digital library services, policies, and workflows to improve efficiency and user experience.
  • Assist with intellectual property rights management and copyright clearance processes for digital content to ensure legal compliance.
  • Stay informed about new technologies, trends, and best practices in digital librarianship, information science, and archival management.
  • Collaborate effectively with content creators, IT professionals, and other team members in a remote work environment, utilizing virtual communication tools.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (3+ years) in digital content management, cataloging, and metadata creation within a library or archival setting.
  • Strong understanding of metadata standards (e.g., Dublin Core, MODS, IPTC) and controlled vocabularies.
  • Proficiency with Digital Asset Management Systems (DAMS) and Content Management Systems (CMS).
  • Excellent organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, and strong analytical capabilities.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for virtual collaboration, documentation, and user support.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines effectively in a remote setting.
  • Solid research and information retrieval skills, with a focus on digital resources.
  • Familiarity with digital preservation principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer literacy.
  • Bachelor's degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS/MLS) or Archival Studies.
  • Experience with specific DAMS platforms such as PhotoShelter, Libris by PhotoShelter, or similar industry-leading systems.
  • Knowledge of South African or broader African cultural heritage and content.
  • Familiarity with basic web technologies (HTML, CSS) for content presentation and understanding web-based platforms.
  • Experience with project management tools for remote team collaboration (e.g., Trello, Asana, Jira).
