Job Description

CapeNature is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Remote Conservation Officer to join our dynamic team, operating from the Leipoldtville area in the Western Cape. This unique remote role is designed for an individual who is passionate about environmental protection and sustainable resource management, capable of working independently while remaining deeply connected to our provincial conservation goals. As a Remote Conservation Officer, you will be instrumental in monitoring, assessing, and reporting on conservation efforts within your designated operational area, utilizing technology to connect with teams and data. Your primary focus will be on ensuring compliance with environmental legislation, conducting ecological surveys, engaging with local communities and landowners, and contributing to the implementation of conservation strategies from a remote base. This position requires exceptional self-discipline, strong communication skills for virtual collaboration, and a proactive approach to fieldwork when necessary. You will be expected to manage your time effectively, produce detailed reports, and participate in online meetings and training sessions. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct remote monitoring and assessment of biodiversity and conservation threats within the Leipoldtville operational area.
  • Utilize digital tools and GIS for mapping, data collection, and analysis of ecological information.
  • Engage with local communities, landowners, and stakeholders via virtual platforms and occasional planned field visits to foster partnerships and promote conservation awareness.
  • Investigate and report on environmental incidents, including illegal activities, habitat degradation, and resource misuse, using remote investigative techniques.
  • Prepare detailed conservation reports, management plans, and compliance documentation for submission through digital channels.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of remote-based conservation strategies and initiatives.
  • Participate in virtual team meetings, workshops, and training sessions to stay updated on conservation best practices and organizational goals.
  • Provide environmental education and outreach remotely to local schools and community groups, when applicable.
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant environmental legislation and CapeNature policies from a remote operational standpoint.
  • Maintain accurate records of all activities, observations, and data collected, ensuring proper digital archival.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Conservation Biology, Ecology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in conservation, environmental management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a remote and independent setting.
  • Proficiency in GIS software and other data management tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for virtual collaboration and report writing.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Valid South African driver's license and access to reliable transport for occasional fieldwork.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field.
  • Experience with remote sensing and drone technology for environmental monitoring.
  • Familiarity with local Western Cape flora, fauna, and environmental challenges.
