This pivotal role is designed for a professional who thrives on providing expert agricultural advice and support directly to farmers in the region. As a Remote Agricultural Extension Officer, you will leverage technology for consultations from your home office, while also conducting frequent, essential on-site visits to farms to assess needs, diagnose challenges, and implement best practices. Your primary objective will be to enhance farm productivity, sustainability, and profitability through the dissemination of agricultural knowledge, technology transfer, and practical training.

This is not a purely desk-bound remote role; it requires a proactive approach to engaging with our farmer network. You will be responsible for developing tailored agricultural plans, advising on crop production, livestock management, soil health, pest and disease control, and precision farming techniques. You will also introduce farmers to Senwes’ innovative products and services that can further optimize their operations. The ideal candidate will possess a strong blend of technical expertise, exceptional communication skills, and the ability to build lasting relationships with farmers. You must be comfortable working independently, managing your schedule effectively, and traveling extensively within the Viljoenskroon area and broader Free State region as required. Your work will directly contribute to the success of our farmers and the continued growth of the agricultural sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert agricultural advice and technical support to farmers via remote channels (phone, video calls) and scheduled on-site farm visits.
  • Conduct farm assessments, soil analysis interpretations, and crop inspections to identify challenges and propose effective solutions.
  • Develop and implement tailored agricultural management plans covering crop rotation, fertilization, irrigation, pest control, and livestock care.
  • Facilitate the transfer of new agricultural technologies and best practices to farmers, ensuring adoption and optimal utilization.
  • Organize and conduct workshops, field days, and training sessions for farmer groups on various agricultural topics.
  • Assist farmers in understanding and adopting sustainable farming practices to enhance environmental stewardship.
  • Promote Senwes' products, services, and financial solutions that are beneficial to farmers' operations.
  • Maintain detailed records of farm visits, recommendations, and farmer progress.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., sales, research) to ensure integrated farmer support.
  • Stay updated with the latest agricultural research, trends, and regulations to provide accurate and relevant advice.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Science, Crop Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as an Agricultural Extension Officer, Agronomist, or similar field-based agricultural role.
  • In-depth knowledge of crop production, livestock management, soil science, and integrated pest management specific to the Free State region.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate complex agricultural concepts to farmers with varying levels of education.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and general computer literacy for remote work.
  • Valid South African driver's license and willingness to travel extensively within the designated area.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant agricultural discipline.
  • Professional registration with SACNASP (South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions).
  • Experience with precision agriculture technologies and data analysis.
  • Fluency in Afrikaans and/or relevant local languages.
  • Demonstrated experience in agricultural training or adult education.
