Job Description
North East Medical Services (NEMS) is seeking a dedicated and passionate Public Health Educator to join our vibrant Community Health team in Chinatown, San Francisco. This pivotal role involves designing, implementing, and evaluating health education programs aimed at improving the health literacy and health outcomes of our diverse patient population. The Public Health Educator will be instrumental in addressing critical health disparities by providing culturally and linguistically appropriate health information on a wide range of topics, including chronic disease management, preventive care, maternal and child health, mental wellness, and infectious disease prevention.
Working directly within the community, you will engage with individuals, families, and community groups, empowering them with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed health decisions. This position requires a proactive individual who is adept at building rapport, capable of adapting educational strategies to meet diverse learning styles, and committed to NEMS’s mission of serving the underserved. You will collaborate closely with healthcare providers, social workers, and other community organizations to ensure a holistic approach to patient care and community wellness. Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver culturally sensitive health education workshops, presentations, and one-on-one counseling sessions to diverse community groups.
- Create and disseminate engaging health education materials (e.g., brochures, flyers, digital content) in multiple languages.
- Conduct community outreach to identify health needs, promote NEMS services, and engage residents in health initiatives.
- Collaborate with NEMS clinical staff and community partners to integrate health education into comprehensive care plans.
- Collect and analyze data to assess the effectiveness of health education programs and make data-driven improvements.
- Serve as a resource for accurate and up-to-date health information for patients and the community.
- Participate in community health fairs, screening events, and public health campaigns.
- Advocate for policies and programs that promote health equity and address social determinants of health.
- Maintain thorough and accurate records of educational activities and participant engagement.
Required Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex health information clearly and concisely.
- Proven experience in developing and implementing health education programs or curricula.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and rapport with diverse populations.
- Cultural competency and sensitivity to the needs of immigrant and underserved communities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with digital communication tools.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Public Health, Health Education, or a related field.
- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) certification.
- Fluency in Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, or other Asian languages prevalent in the community.
- Previous experience working in a community health center or with Asian immigrant populations.
- Experience with health data collection, analysis, and reporting.
