Job Description
Sidney Stringer Primary Academy is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Playground Monitor to join our enthusiastic support staff team. This vital part-time role involves supervising children during their lunch breaks and playtimes, ensuring a safe, engaging, and positive environment for all pupils. As a Playground Monitor, you will be the eyes and ears on the playground, playing a crucial role in the children’s daily well-being and social development outside of classroom hours. You will be responsible for observing children’s activities, promoting positive play, encouraging inclusive games, and facilitating a harmonious atmosphere. This position requires an individual who is approachable, vigilant, and capable of fostering good behaviour and resolving minor conflicts effectively and calmly. You will also be expected to administer basic first aid for minor injuries and ensure that all safeguarding procedures are meticulously followed. The ideal candidate will have a genuine interest in working with primary school-aged children and possess the ability to communicate clearly and empathetically with both pupils and staff. This role is more than just supervision; it’s about creating opportunities for children to build friendships, develop social skills, and enjoy their break times in a secure and stimulating setting. Key Responsibilities
- Supervise primary school children during lunch breaks and playtimes, both indoors and outdoors, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
- Promote positive behaviour, fair play, and good manners amongst pupils, intervening proactively to resolve minor disputes and challenging situations.
- Encourage active and inclusive play, initiating games and activities to engage children of varying ages and abilities.
- Administer basic first aid for minor injuries, comforting children and reporting incidents to the relevant staff members as per school policy.
- Maintain a clean and tidy playground environment, ensuring equipment is used safely and reporting any hazards or damage promptly.
- Communicate effectively with teaching staff and senior leaders regarding any concerns about individual children’s welfare, behaviour, or incidents.
- Ensure adherence to the school's safeguarding policies and procedures to protect all children.
- Act as a positive role model for pupils, demonstrating kindness, patience, and respect.
Required Skills
- Experience working with primary school-aged children, ideally in a supervisory capacity.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with children and colleagues.
- A patient, calm, and approachable demeanour.
- Strong observational skills and the ability to respond effectively to a variety of situations.
- Understanding of child development and behaviour management strategies.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
- Basic knowledge of first aid (certification preferred but training can be provided).
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant qualification in childcare, education, or youth work.
- Current Paediatric First Aid certificate.
- Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures.
- Experience working within a school setting.
