Job Description

We are seeking an exceptional and highly experienced Plant Manager to lead our extensive aluminium smelting operations at Richards Bay. This critical leadership role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of plant operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective production of high-quality aluminium. The Plant Manager will drive operational excellence, foster a culture of continuous improvement, and ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards. You will be instrumental in developing and executing strategic initiatives to optimize plant performance, manage large-scale budgets, and lead a diverse workforce towards achieving ambitious production targets. This role demands a visionary leader with a proven track record in managing complex industrial environments, who can inspire teams, implement best practices, and maintain strong relationships with all stakeholders. Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all operational activities of the aluminium smelter, ensuring optimal production output, quality, and efficiency.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans to achieve operational goals, drive continuous improvement, and enhance plant performance.
  • Champion a robust safety culture, ensuring strict adherence to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and policies.
  • Oversee budget planning and control, managing operational costs effectively while maximizing return on investment.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a large team of diverse professionals, fostering a high-performance, collaborative, and engaged work environment.
  • Optimize production processes, implement lean manufacturing principles, and drive innovation to improve productivity and reduce waste.
  • Ensure product quality meets established standards and customer specifications.
  • Manage maintenance programs to ensure equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, suppliers, local communities, and government officials.
  • Prepare and present comprehensive reports on plant performance, safety metrics, and financial outcomes to senior management.
  • Drive initiatives related to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in a large-scale heavy industrial or manufacturing environment, with at least 5 years at a senior management level.
  • Demonstrated expertise in operational management, process optimization, and industrial safety protocols.
  • Strong financial acumen and experience with budget management, cost control, and capital expenditure planning.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate and develop large teams.
  • Proven ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma).
  • Thorough understanding of relevant environmental regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Metallurgical, Chemical, Mechanical, or Industrial) or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA) or a related field.
  • Experience in the aluminium smelting industry or similar continuous process environments.
  • Certification in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma Black Belt, or other operational excellence methodologies.
  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP).
  • Strong network within the South African industrial sector.
