Job Description

This role is for a highly creative and experienced Freelance Photographer to join our network of content creators at Migori Media Center. We are seeking a visionary individual with a keen eye for detail, a strong storytelling ability through visuals, and a diverse portfolio showcasing exceptional photographic talent across various genres. As a Freelance Photographer, you will be instrumental in capturing the vibrant life, compelling stories, and significant events that shape Migori County. Your work will support our various projects, including documentary photography, event coverage, promotional campaigns for local businesses, social impact initiatives, and cultural documentation.

We anticipate a flexible, project-based engagement, requiring you to be available for assignments on an as-needed basis, sometimes with short notice. This is an incredible opportunity for a photographer who is passionate about their craft and eager to make a tangible impact by contributing to a rich visual archive of the region. You will be expected to not only capture high-quality images but also to contribute creatively to concept development, ensuring that each photographic project aligns with our mission to tell authentic and engaging local stories. The ideal candidate will be adept at both on-location shooting and post-production, possessing a strong understanding of lighting, composition, and digital editing techniques. Key Responsibilities

  • Execute high-quality photographic assignments, including but not limited to event coverage, portraiture, documentary, lifestyle, and product photography.
  • Collaborate with the Migori Media Center team and clients to understand project requirements, creative briefs, and desired outcomes.
  • Travel to various locations within Migori County and occasionally the broader Nyanza region for shoots.
  • Manage all aspects of photography, from planning and scouting to shooting and post-production (editing, retouching, color correction).
  • Ensure all images meet professional standards for resolution, composition, and aesthetic appeal.
  • Organize, back up, and archive photographic assets efficiently.
  • Maintain and operate professional photography equipment.
  • Contribute creative ideas and visual concepts to projects.
  • Adhere to deadlines and deliver completed work in required formats.
  • Represent Migori Media Center professionally during all assignments.

Required Skills

  • Proficient in professional-grade DSLR/Mirrorless cameras and relevant accessories.
  • Expertise in photo editing software (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom).
  • Strong understanding of photographic principles: lighting, composition, exposure, focus.
  • Proven ability to tell stories through compelling visuals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating diverse photographic experience.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing project requirements and schedules.
  • Keen eye for detail and an aesthetic sensibility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Photography, Media Arts, Visual Communication, or a related field.
  • Experience working with community organizations or NGOs.
  • Familiarity with the culture, geography, and socio-economic landscape of Migori County.
  • Ability to produce short video clips or drone photography.
  • Knowledge of local languages (e.g., Dholuo).
