Bloemfontein Veterinary Clinic is actively seeking a dedicated and compassionate Pet Care Assistant to join our thriving team. As a Pet Care Assistant, you will be on the front lines of animal welfare, providing essential daily care that directly impacts their health and happiness. Your days will be dynamic, involving everything from preparing and distributing tailored meals according to veterinary instructions, to performing thorough grooming tasks such as bathing, brushing, and nail trims, always with a gentle touch and reassuring presence. You will become a keen observer of animal behaviour, noting any changes in their appetite, demeanour, or physical condition, and communicating these critical observations promptly to our veterinary nurses and doctors. Maintaining a clean, safe, and stress-free environment for our patients is paramount, and you will play a crucial role in the meticulous sanitation of kennels, catteries, and communal areas. Key Responsibilities

  • Execute daily feeding and watering of animals according to prescribed dietary plans and schedules.
  • Assist with comprehensive grooming tasks, including bathing, brushing, drying, and nail trims for various animal species.
  • Maintain impeccable cleanliness and hygiene standards within animal enclosures, treatment areas, and the general facility.
  • Monitor animal behaviour, appetite, hydration, and eliminations closely, promptly reporting any concerns or changes to veterinary staff.
  • Administer oral medications and topical treatments as specifically directed and supervised by veterinarians or veterinary nurses.
  • Provide compassionate and gentle handling, comfort, and socialization to animals under our care, reducing stress and anxiety.
  • Support veterinarians and veterinary nurses during examinations, treatments, and minor procedures.
  • Ensure all supplies are well-stocked, and equipment is cleaned, sterilized, and functional.
  • Accurately document all care provided, observations made, and medications administered in patient records.
  • Adhere strictly to all clinic protocols, safety guidelines, and animal welfare regulations.

Required Skills

  • A demonstrable and genuine passion for animals of all types and sizes.
  • Ability to safely, patiently, and compassionately handle a variety of animal species, including those that may be stressed or fearful.
  • Strong observational skills with acute attention to detail regarding animal health and behaviour.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills for effective interaction with team members.
  • Physical stamina and the ability to lift up to 20kg, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Basic understanding of animal welfare principles and a commitment to ethical animal treatment.
  • High level of reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a close-knit team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous practical experience in an animal care setting (e.g., pet shop, kennel, animal shelter, grooming salon, or veterinary clinic).
  • Knowledge of basic animal first aid and emergency care procedures.
  • Formal training or certification in animal care, veterinary assistance, or a related field.
  • Valid South African driver's license.
  • Experience with different grooming techniques and tools.
