Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Agricultural Pest Control Technician to join our dynamic team in Delareyville, North West. This critical role involves protecting agricultural operations, including farms, storage facilities, and processing plants, from damaging pests. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting thorough inspections, identifying a wide array of agricultural pests (e.g., insects, rodents, birds affecting crops and livestock), developing tailored treatment plans, and meticulously applying control measures in accordance with national regulations and safety standards. This position requires a deep understanding of pest biology, integrated pest management principles specific to agriculture, and a commitment to safe chemical handling. You will be a vital link between our company and our agricultural clients, providing expert advice, detailed reports, and ensuring their operations remain pest-free and productive. Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive pest inspections on various agricultural sites, including crop fields, livestock facilities, grain storage, and farm outbuildings.
- Accurately identify agricultural pests such as stalk borers, aphids, nematodes, mites, rodents (e.g., rats, mice), birds, and other species relevant to the region.
- Formulate and implement effective, environmentally conscious integrated pest management (IPM) strategies tailored to specific agricultural needs.
- Apply pesticides, herbicides, and other control agents safely and precisely, adhering strictly to product labels, company protocols, and Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) regulations.
- Operate and maintain specialized pest control equipment, including sprayers, foggers, and bait stations, ensuring optimal functionality and safety.
- Provide expert advice and recommendations to farmers and agricultural managers on pest prevention, sanitation, and long-term control measures.
- Complete detailed service reports, including pest activity, treatment performed, recommendations, and material usage.
- Maintain accurate records of client interactions, schedules, and service history.
- Ensure strict adherence to all health, safety, and environmental guidelines, including the proper storage and disposal of chemicals.
- Continuously update knowledge on new pest control techniques, products, and agricultural industry trends.
- Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with agricultural clients.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 2 years proven experience in agricultural pest control or a closely related field.
- In-depth knowledge of common agricultural pests, their life cycles, behaviours, and damage patterns.
- Strong understanding of pesticide application methods, equipment, and safety protocols.
- Familiarity with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles and practices in an agricultural context.
- Valid South African driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with clients and team members.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Physical fitness to perform demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and working in various weather conditions and terrains.
Preferred Qualifications
- DAFF (Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) P-number or equivalent certification for commercial pesticide applicators.
- Certificate or Diploma in Pest Management, Agriculture, Agronomy, or a related scientific field.
- Experience with advanced pest monitoring technologies.
- First Aid and basic firefighting certification.
