While our physical roots are firmly planted in Cintsa, Eastern Cape, this pivotal role offers the flexibility of working from anywhere, providing strategic guidance and practical expertise to enhance our existing permaculture projects and develop new sustainable initiatives. As our Permaculture Consultant, you will be instrumental in evolving our permaculture garden into an even more vibrant and productive educational and food security resource. You will lead the development of comprehensive permaculture strategies, conduct remote training sessions for staff and community members, and advise on design, implementation, and maintenance of diverse ecological systems. This role demands a blend of innovative thinking, practical permaculture knowledge, and a deep commitment to community empowerment through sustainable practices. You will work closely with our school leadership and ground staff, providing actionable insights that align with our educational mission and the needs of the Chintsa East community. Your work will directly impact our students’ understanding of sustainable living, contribute to their nutrition, and foster a greater sense of environmental responsibility. This is an exciting opportunity for a self-motivated individual to make a significant, lasting impact from a remote setting, supporting a vital educational and community development project in South Africa, contributing to both ecological health and human well-being.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine permaculture master plans for the school grounds, integrating food production, water harvesting, waste management, and biodiversity.
  • Provide remote consultation and strategic advice on existing permaculture garden operations, including crop rotation, soil health, pest management, and compost systems.
  • Design and facilitate engaging remote training workshops for school staff, students, and community members on permaculture principles and practical application techniques.
  • Advise on sustainable resource management, including innovative water conservation techniques (e.g., greywater systems, rainwater harvesting) and energy efficiency solutions.
  • Conduct virtual site assessments and provide detailed, actionable reports with recommendations for ecological enhancements and project implementation strategies.
  • Support the seamless integration of permaculture education into the school curriculum, developing age-appropriate, engaging learning materials and activities.
  • Research and recommend appropriate indigenous and beneficial plant species (edible, medicinal, nitrogen-fixing) suitable for the Eastern Cape climate and soil conditions.
  • Assist in grant writing or funding proposals by contributing expert knowledge on project design, expected ecological benefits, and social impact.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of permaculture interventions, providing constructive feedback and necessary adjustments to optimize outcomes.
  • Foster a vibrant culture of environmental stewardship and sustainable living within the school and broader community through proactive outreach and engagement initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrable expertise in permaculture design principles and practical application (Permaculture Design Course – PDC certification or equivalent professional experience).
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional experience in permaculture project management, consultation, or hands-on implementation.
  • Strong understanding of ecological systems, soil science, water management, and regenerative agriculture practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to convey complex permaculture concepts clearly and engagingly to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering high-quality remote training and educational materials using various digital platforms.
  • Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple projects effectively, and meet deadlines in a remote professional setting.
  • Cultural sensitivity and experience working effectively with diverse communities, ideally within a South African context.
  • Proficiency in using digital collaboration tools (e.g., video conferencing, project management software, cloud-based documents).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Sustainable Agriculture, Environmental Science, Horticulture, Ecological Design, or a closely related field.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations or educational institutions, particularly in rural development or community empowerment contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully initiating and managing community-led permaculture initiatives.
  • Fluency in Xhosa or another local South African language would be a significant advantage.
  • A comprehensive portfolio showcasing previous permaculture design and implementation projects, including measurable impacts.
