Job Description

Bauchi State Specialist Hospital is actively seeking a highly skilled, compassionate, and dedicated Optometrist to join our dynamic Ophthalmology Department. This crucial role involves providing comprehensive eye care services to patients of all ages, ranging from routine eye examinations to the diagnosis and management of various ocular conditions and diseases. The successful candidate will be instrumental in enhancing the quality of life for our patients by preserving and improving their vision. You will be responsible for conducting thorough visual assessments, prescribing corrective lenses, diagnosing vision abnormalities, and collaborating with ophthalmologists and other healthcare professionals to develop integrated treatment plans. Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive eye examinations, including refractions, visual acuity tests, and binocular vision assessments, for patients of all ages.
• Diagnose and manage common ocular diseases and conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, conjunctivitis, and macular degeneration.
• Prescribe and fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other visual aids, ensuring optimal vision correction and patient comfort.
• Educate patients on eye health, preventative care, proper use and care of contact lenses, and available treatment options.
• Collaborate effectively with ophthalmologists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care and appropriate referrals when necessary.
• Maintain accurate, confidential, and detailed patient records, including medical histories, examination findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans, in compliance with hospital standards.
• Operate and maintain ophthalmic diagnostic and treatment equipment, ensuring proper calibration, cleanliness, and adherence to safety protocols.
• Participate in continuing professional development to stay abreast of advancements in optometry and incorporate best practices into patient care.
• Contribute to community eye health initiatives, outreach programs, and screenings as required to promote eye health awareness.
• Provide pre- and post-operative care and counseling for patients undergoing ophthalmic surgical procedures, ensuring clear understanding and support.

Required Skills

• Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) degree from an accredited institution.
• Valid license to practice Optometry in Nigeria from the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Registration Board of Nigeria (ODORBN).
• Proven clinical experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of ocular conditions and diseases.
• Proficiency in performing comprehensive eye examinations and prescribing corrective lenses and vision aids.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and patient counseling skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities in a clinical setting.
• Demonstrated empathy, patience, and a patient-centered approach to care.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as an integral part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
• Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and clinical documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Post-NYSC experience of at least 2 years in a hospital or busy clinical setting.
• Specialization or advanced training in areas such as low vision, pediatric optometry, ocular disease management, or advanced contact lens fitting.
• Ability to communicate fluently in Hausa or other local languages prevalent in Bauchi State to effectively serve the community.
• Experience with advanced ophthalmic diagnostic equipment (e.g., Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Visual Field Analyzer, Fundus Camera).
• Active membership in relevant professional optical associations such as the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA).
