Job Description

Katsina State Specialist Hospital is actively seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Ophthalmologist to join our dynamic medical team. You will be responsible for conducting thorough eye examinations, interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing individualized treatment plans, which may include prescribing corrective lenses, medication, or performing intricate surgical procedures. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity tests, tonometry, ophthalmoscopy, and slit-lamp examinations.
  • Diagnose and treat various ocular diseases, injuries, and conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and refractive errors.
  • Conduct ophthalmic surgical procedures, including cataract removal, glaucoma surgery, and other relevant interventions.
  • Prescribe and manage medications for eye conditions and corrective lenses (glasses and contact lenses).
  • Provide pre-operative and post-operative care for surgical patients.
  • Collaborate effectively with other medical specialists, optometrists, and healthcare professionals to ensure holistic patient care.
  • Participate in hospital rounds, clinical meetings, and contribute to medical education initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and confidential patient medical records.
  • Educate patients and their families on eye health, disease prevention, and treatment plans.

Required Skills

  • MBBS or MD degree from a recognized medical institution.
  • Specialization in Ophthalmology (e.g., residency completion).
  • Valid medical license to practice in Nigeria (Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria – MDCN).
  • Demonstrable experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of ocular conditions.
  • Proficiency in performing common ophthalmic surgical procedures.
  • Excellent diagnostic, clinical, and surgical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to empathize with patients.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume healthcare environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Fellowship or Board Certification in Ophthalmology (e.g., FWACS, FMCOph).
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of post-specialization experience in a hospital setting.
  • Experience working in a public health system or similar community-focused hospital.
  • Familiarity with local health challenges and community health initiatives.
  • Proficiency in using advanced ophthalmic diagnostic and surgical equipment.
