Job Description
The Hopefield Museum is seeking a passionate and dedicated Museum Curator with a specialisation in local history to join our small but impactful team. This is a unique opportunity for an individual deeply committed to the stories and heritage of the Western Cape, particularly the Hopefield area, to play a pivotal role in shaping our museum’s collection, exhibitions, and public engagement programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for the comprehensive management of our historical collections, from acquisition and documentation to preservation and interpretation. You will be a key storyteller, translating complex historical narratives into engaging and accessible experiences for our diverse audience, including local residents, researchers, and tourists.
This role demands not only a strong academic background in history, museum studies, or a related field, but also a genuine connection to community and an ability to foster relationships with local historians, elders, and residents. You will be instrumental in identifying and acquiring new historical materials, conducting primary research, and developing innovative exhibitions that reflect the multifaceted history of Hopefield – from its indigenous roots and colonial past to its agricultural development and contemporary life. Key Responsibilities
- Manage the museum's historical collections, including acquisition, cataloging, conservation, and storage.
- Conduct in-depth research on local history topics relevant to Hopefield and the Western Cape.
- Develop, design, and install engaging permanent and temporary exhibitions.
- Prepare interpretive materials, including exhibition labels, brochures, and digital content.
- Provide expert guidance and interpretation for visitors, researchers, and community groups.
- Collaborate with local community members, historians, and organisations to gather historical information and artifacts.
- Assist in the development and delivery of educational programs, workshops, and public lectures.
- Ensure the proper environmental control and security for all collection items.
- Contribute to grant writing and fundraising efforts to support museum projects and initiatives.
- Supervise volunteers and interns assisting with curatorial tasks.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in museum curation and local history research.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in History, Museum Studies, Archaeology, or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of curatorial experience, preferably with a focus on local or regional history.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Western Cape history and culture.
- Proficiency in collection management software and archival practices.
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
- Strong organisational abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team.
- Experience in exhibition development and installation.
- Proficiency in both English and Afrikaans (written and spoken).
Preferred Qualifications
