Job Description
As a Municipal Road Maintenance Worker for the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality, you will play a crucial and hands-on role in ensuring the safety, accessibility, and overall functionality of our local road network, with a specific focus on the Rietbron area and its surrounding rural routes. This demanding yet highly rewarding position involves a wide array of practical tasks to maintain, repair, and construct roads, ensuring they consistently meet essential safety and operational standards for public use and access. Your daily responsibilities will encompass a variety of tasks, ranging from routine inspections and preventative maintenance to urgent repairs. This includes, but is not limited to, the critical work of pothole patching, crack sealing, gravelling unpaved roads, diligently clearing stormwater drains and culverts to prevent flooding, and effectively managing roadside vegetation to maintain clear sightlines and prevent hazards. You will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a range of hand tools, power tools, and potentially heavy equipment, often in varying weather conditions, to keep our transport infrastructure in optimal condition. Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine inspection, maintenance, and repair of municipal roads, including pothole patching, crack sealing, and resurfacing.
- Operate and maintain a variety of hand tools, power tools, and light construction equipment safely and effectively.
- Clear stormwater drains, culverts, and other drainage systems to prevent water accumulation and road damage.
- Assist with the gravelling and grading of unpaved roads to ensure smooth and safe surfaces.
- Manage roadside vegetation, including cutting grass and clearing brush, to maintain visibility and prevent hazards.
- Participate in the setting up of traffic control devices and warning signs in work zones to ensure worker and public safety.
- Report any structural deficiencies, safety hazards, or equipment malfunctions to supervisors promptly.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, municipal policies, and environmental guidelines.
- Collaborate effectively with team members and supervisors to complete projects on schedule and to required standards.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in general labour, construction, or road maintenance.
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and basic maintenance equipment safely.
- Strong physical stamina and ability to perform demanding tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Good understanding of basic road construction and maintenance techniques.
- Valid Code B (or equivalent) South African driver's license.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to safety protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- Grade 10 or equivalent educational qualification.
- Previous experience working for a municipality or in the public sector.
- Experience operating light construction machinery (e.g., compaction equipment, small excavators).
- First Aid certification.
- Knowledge of local road network and geography of the Rietbron area.
